The Russian Navy has destroyed at least nine Ukrainian drone boats in the Black Sea within 48 hours, using missiles, drones, and guns.
The destruction of seven drone boats was reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense on June 30, which said the next day, that two more were hit.
Additionally, the ministry released later on July 1 video footage showing the destruction of five drone boats in the northeastern part of the Black Sea by the Russian Navy. It is unclear, however, if these fives were among the nine reported earlier, or additional ones.
Most of the drone boats were targeted with anti-tank guided missiles, while others were hit with Lancet loitering munitions, and machine guns.
The past year saw a significant increase in Ukrainian drone boat attacks in the Black Sea, with the Crimean Peninsula being the main target.
Besides the more traditional explosive-rigged drone boats which are designed for one-way attack missions, Kiev forces have begun to deploy new models which are designed to carry small first-person view suicide quadcopters or even armed with heat-seeking anti-aircraft missiles.
In the last few months, however, effective defense by the Russian Navy has rendered these drone boats ineffective. To compensate, Ukraine has escalated its attacks with one-way aerial drones on Crimea.
