The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on July 18 that its forces had struck a “Neptune-2” cruise missile launcher belonging to Kiev forces.
In a brief statement, the ministry said that the USPU-360 launcher and a transport-loading vehicle carrying missiles were struck with Iskander ballistic missiles and Geran-4 one-way attack drones close to the settlement of Rybakovka in the Nikolayev region. It also released footage of the strikes showing direct hits.
Neptune is an anti-ship cruise missile with land-attack capabilities. The development of the Neptune-2 was announced just last month.
The ministry was likely referring to one of the missile’s latest extended-range versions, which can reportedly hit targets up to 1,000 kilometers away.
Kyiv forces have used the missile in several attacks on Russian territory, especially against targets in the Crimean Peninsula, since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine. However, the production rate remains extremely low, and the number of USPU-360 launchers in service is thought to be very small.
The Iskander’s 9M723 tactical quasi-ballistic missile, which is said to have a range of nearly 500 kilometers, was likely used in the strikes.
The highly maneuverable missile can be armed with different conventional warheads, including a cluster munitions warhead, a fuel-air explosive enhanced-blast warhead, a high-explosive fragmentation warhead, an earth penetrator for bunker busting, and an electromagnetic pulse device for anti-radar missions.
The missile is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system (INS). It can also be equipped with an optical seeker featuring a digitized scene-mapping area correlator system for terminal guidance.
Meanwhile, the Geran-4 is a deeply upgraded version of the Geran-3, which is alleged to be a copy of the Iranian Shahed-238 jet-powered drone.
The drone retains the overall delta-wing design, but with improved aerodynamic and stealth features. It is also equipped with a more powerful jet engine — allegedly a copy of the Chinese Telefly TF-TJ1600A. It can reportedly reach speeds between 350 and 500 kilometers per hour, and has an effective range of 850 kilometers.
Notably, the drones used in the latest strikes were equipped with an artificial intelligence-powered electro-optical targeting system, in addition to the basic GLONASS-aided INS.
As the Kyiv regime has stepped up attacks on Russian territory in recent months, the Russian military has ramped up efforts to locate and destroy Ukraine’s remaining long-range weapons, like the Neptune.
