On June 1, Russian sources shared a video on social media showing a Su-35S fighter jet of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) engaging Ukrainian warplanes over Kharkov oblast. LINK
In the video, the Russian fighter jet launches three R-77-1 beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile at the Ukrainian warplanes from a range of more than 70 kilometers over western Kharkov then maneuvers out from the region.
The R-77-1, which was developed by Vympel, has a maximum range of up to 110 kilometers. The missile utilizes an inertial navigation system with mid-course update. For terminal guidance, the missile is equipped with the advanced 9B-1248 active radar seeker. The missile has a fire-and-forget mode.
The long-range BVR missile completed test in 2013 and entered service with the VKS in 2015. It was subsequently deployed by Su-35S fighters in Syria on combat air patrols.
The R-77-1 is main air-to-air armament of Su-35S and other VKS warplanes taking part in the Russian special military operation in Ukraine.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has reported several air-to-air kills by VKS warplanes since the start of the operation. However, the ministry is yet to provide any information on the performance of the R-77-1 and other Russian air-to-air missiles.

The Ukrainian Air Force is still active mainly thanks to support from Eastern Europe NATO states and to the widespread of airfields in Ukraine. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of Ukrainian aerial operations remains largely unfelt.
The VKS continue to be the dominate air power over Ukraine. Russian warplanes carry out dozens of airstrikes on Kiev forces on a daily basis without being seriously challenged by Ukrainian air defenses or warplanes.
Always great to see these brave Russian guys hunting down and engaging the Ukrainian Nazis wherever they are! Russia is fighting NATO and that should neither be a surprise or a problem. Russia needs to be dimensioned and equipped to take on all NATO equipment, and should see it as a normal challenge of modern warfare. Indeed a preparation for the future. Russia needs prevail against all in its special operation to free both Ukraine of Nazis and also the world of western liberal dictators!

Im sceptical if those missiles hit their target, they may have 100km range but you have other factors like the speed of your aircraft that slingshots them aswell as the density of the air. The Ukraine aircraft could drop altitude while cranking left or right to drag the missile into thicker air as it bleeds of energy in the turn.
What he should have done is fired one, got closer, fired another, then the 3rd should be within a range where no manoeuvring can avoid the missile. Of course it depends on quality of the pilots but at least hes in the air, in combat and trying to down enemy planes.
So mad respect to this pilot for being in the air, in real combat. You will get to fight and fly another day which is always a good thing.
You have no idea what you are talking about. Those weapons are meant for long range interception. The Ukie pilots probably don’t even know what is coming for them. The missile is engaging them with about Mach 4. The missile needs about 60 seconds to fly 50 km. Try to make some maneuvers in that time. The is a reason this missile is being used by the Russian military. I guess, it gets the job done.
Its pretty basic conservation of energy calculation, it may reach Mach 4, but it will start at the velocity of the plane its launched from. If it has to turn, it will bleed energy and its only has so much propellant. Literally says max range of 110km’s this would be a highspeed launch and a target at high altitude, because the movement you drop to the deck you need ALOT more energy to deal with wind resistance. Its why cars require huge horsepower’s to increase top speed by small amounts, its is not linear. The faster you go, at low altitudes the more resistance you have to combat this is basic BVR engagement stuff.
There is also Chaff, because this is an active radar homing missile if you throw huge about of aluminium strips into the air, you can confuse the radar. Hence the requirement to shoot more then one missile, ultimately tho the evidence will be on the ground so hopefully we will get some images of what it shot down.
Or we wont, really depends on the level of training of the Ukrainian pilot and if the aircraft has decent radars that detect’s your getting painted by enemy radars and that their are missiles in the air.

Wind resistance is why you see the missiles (I counted 3 launches) immediately take a high arc parabolic path. Over 15 or 20 km altitude there is very little air resistance.
The targeted aircraft has time to maneuver (a minute is enough time), but it will be hard to out-turn three R77’s swooping down for the kill at mach 3 to 4.
You are comparing cars to missiles now? Seriously, are you on drugs? Missiles accelerate very fast at top speed. They get quicker in thinner air but they move at their top propulsion. The enemy aircraft has only seconds to decide what to do. They will mostly activate countermeasures and hope that this will be enough. But mostly they will be toast and will eject merely seconds before the impact, if they ever see it coming. You can outmaneuver short rage missiles during a dog-fight, but a long range missile at about 1000 to 1500 m/s is a 95% hit. Missiles have a lot of processing power and use complex algorithm to calculate the aircraft’s trajectory in advance. To confuse it with countermeasures is pretty hard these days.

Depends on how far the target is. BVR is anything beyond about 40kms. At that range it would take a mach 4 missile 30 seconds to hit its target. Good luck dodging that

According to the markings on the left side of the Su-35 HUD those missiles were launched at the very beginning of the “OK to fire” zone and therefore could have been evaded. At over 70k distance, the Ukrop jet has a good chance to evade unless he is a stupid fuck like the fag general Zelensky. It would have been better to have waited until the marker arrow on the left dropped down further.
