The submarines of the Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet continue to hit high-value targets in Ukraine with Kalibr land-attack cruise missiles.

On May 4, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that a submarine of the Black Sea Fleet had attacked military infrastructure targets in Ukraine.

“In the process of conducting the special military operation the Russian army carried out another strike with smart cruise missiles Kalibr against Ukrainian military infrastructures. A submarine of the Black Sea Fleet launched two cruise missiles Kalibr against the designated ground targets in Ukraine,” the Defense Ministry said.

The ministry released a video showing an Improved Kilo-class diesel-electric attack submarine launching two 3M14K Kalibr land-attack cruise missiles at the targets.

The 3M14T cruise missile, which has a range of 2500 kilometers, is guided by INS [inertial navigation system] and GLONASS satellite guidance systems. The missile is also equipped with a TERCOM [terrain contour matching] system to fly at very low altitudes.

The missile, which has a terminal speed of Mach 0.8, is armed with a 450 kg HE-FRAG [high explosive fragmentation] or bunker buster warhead.

The 3M14T is the main land-attack weapon of the Improved Kilo. Submarines of this class has a displacement of 3,100 tons with full load. An improved Kilo class submarine can reach a top speed of 17 knots surfaced and 20 knots submerged. Each submarine is armed with 533 mm torpedo tubes, which are used to launch torpedoes and cruise missiles.

At least six Improved Kilo submarines are in service with the Black Sea Fleet’s 4th Independent Submarine Brigade. Combined with their high stealth, the land-attack capabilities of these submarines make them a lethal weapon. These submarines have been attacking high-value targets of Kiev forces since the beginning of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine.
