The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) had carried out a series of drone and artillery strikes against militants positions in the northwestern Greater Idlib region in cooperation with allied Russian forces, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced on October 24.

In a statement, the ministry said that the pinpoint strikes were carried out in response to recent attacks on military positions and residential areas near Greater Idlib. The strikes targeted headquarters, fortifications, warehouses and military equipment in the countryside of Idlib, according to the ministry, which stated that dozens of militants were killed or wounded.

Video footage released by the ministry shows two strikes with FPV suicide drones, the first ever to emerge from Syria, and another strike with an armed drone.

The use of FPV suicide drones by the SAA was first reported on Septmber 28, when one such drone was shot down by militants from al-Qaed-affilaited Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib, near the town of Kansafra in the southern Idlib countryside.

The appearance of FPV suicide drones with the SAA is not suprising considering that they are cheap and easy to manufacture. It is very possible that the army received some support from Russia, who gained vast experience in mass producing and operating this type of drones following the start of the special military operation in Ukraine.

FPV suicide drones will allow the SAA to target militants in Greater Idlib with lower cost, higher precision and with less risk to civilians.

In recent weeks, HTS and its allies escalated attacks, violating a ceasefire in Greater Idlib that was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than three years ago.

The militants were blamed for a drone attack that targeted the annual graduation ceremony at the Syrian Military Academy near the central city of Homs on October 5. The attack claimed the lives of 89 civilians and service members and left more than 277 other wounded.

The SAA and the Russian military group in Syria have been targeting HTS and its allies in Greater Idlib on a daily basis since the attack.
