In Video: Syrian Army Deploys TOS-1A Thermobaric Rocket Launchers Around Idlib

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has deployed at least two TOS-1A thermobaric rocket launchers around the militant-held governorate of Idlib in the northwestern part of the country, a video released by pro-government activists on May 3 revealed.

The TOS-1A, which is based on the T-72 tank chassis, launches heavy 220mm rockets with a range of up to 6km. The rockets are armed with a unique fuel air explosives (FAE) warhead.

The SAA successfully used the TOS-1A rocket system for the first time during the battle of northern Lattakia in 2015. Later, the system saw action in the army’s anti-terror operations in Aleppo, Deir Ezzor, Homs, Damascus and Daraa.

The TOS-1A is mainly used against military personnel, equipment and buildings, including fortified constructions, such as trenches, tunnels and caves.

Last week, several pro-government sources claimed that the SAA and its allies are preparing to launch a large-scale military operation around Idlib. Despite the lack of any official confirmation, the deployment of TOS-1A thermobaric rocket launchers may be considered as a fact supporting these claims.

The jihadists will feel a real “Hell on Earth”!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Promitheas Apollonious

hopefully yes.

d'Artagnan

Let’s hope so. So far SAA and Russia have deployed a lot of systems but not really used them. The S-300 is a classic case of static weapons that have never been used. The Syrian situation is at a critical juncture as Turkey is annexing large regions of Syria.

A regiment of TOR’s would be useful I think.

The US/NATO backed terror gangs have their backs to the wall, as even though Turkey has been aiding them, Turkey will not want these beasts on her territory.

The terrorist gangs will therefore do anything they can to survive, and ultimately, can only have any chance do so with the direct intervention of NATO.

Promitheas Apollonious

you forget that 90% of them already surrendered once or twice base on the russian dealing so why not surrender this time also, when the going gets to that point again? Then quietly via turkey will appear on the borders of greece as refugees and pass into europe with soros mko. This is been happening the last ten years. Nothing new to the ones who provoke this to happen and delay its eradication.

FlorianGeyer

Britain is currently having a recruitment problem for the military, and was mooting about accepting non UK or commonwealth nationals.

Perhaps the gangs in Idlib could be attracted to join the British forces ? Especially as some of these gangs have been trained in battlefield 1st Aid and other military skills :)

I am not too sure though how the gang members would adapt to the latest LGBT doctrine in the British forces.

You can call me Al

No chance, this lot do not like the LGBT lot, already recruited.

Promitheas Apollonious

yes in public they have make few practical statements but is secret 90% of them are homos any way. In the british army they be liberated so as you can see they have double profit, to go back to their masters in an official capacity.

Promitheas Apollonious

well the Gurkhas have accepted and UK has pay a lot of money, for the gangs in idlip and not only, so it be ungrateful for them not to accept to fight along side the british army in an official capacity. after all they have the same aims and go.

Hanny Benny

their lovely calipHell ;)

BBQ time )))

Siege engines!!

Good stuff to see the grill heading the jihadist way. Thank God the Russian have increased the effective range of the missiles to 6km as the older models ( used in Chechnya in the 90’s) with their 3 km limited range exposed the system and its crew to possible anti tank missiles system (with more modern ones reaching 3km range without problems), Now, they are out of range at over 5km.

Promitheas Apollonious

6 km are not out of range in modern wars.

You can call me Al

It is good enough in Syria. Cheers for now.

meridius

Agree with you if they were to face the latest military technology and the latest US made ATM units. Not the case here. The Islamist are given by their puppet masters ( from what I see) at best 80’s military hardware, nothing newer than that.

Promitheas Apollonious

the one it is arming and directing the islamist as you call them to me they just targets, are the turks. The only way for the turks to get what they want is this islamists, to be able hold and push back the SAA army. Other wise the grand plan of ertogan goes down the drain because next in line it is afrin and then the rest of the country to be liberated according to priority the syrians and their allies will give to each territory, in need for liberation. We already seen the islamist top have all kind of weapons either compliments of the zionists or the turks which is kind of the same shit different name.

So think again.

Shy Talk

“The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has deployed at least two TOS-1A thermobaric rocket launchers”, there was 4 in that convoy

You can call me Al

Therefore “at least two” is correct lol.

meridius

They have as many as Russia is willing to lease them. It can be 2, 4 or 20 if need be.

James

2 x launchers plus 2 x reloaders?

Leon

Russia is not interested in Syria : only Tartous and Hmeimim matter for them. They won’t help Syria to retake Idlib : only to make attacks stop on their bases.

You can call me Al

Check this – https://syria.liveuamap.com/……. they are bombing Idlib to hell.

Leon

Yes because the terrorists attack Hmeimim NOT to retake Idlb that was given as a gift to Erdogan.

You can call me Al

We agree to disagree then.

It is a lot more complicated than at first sight. Putin’s long term game here is to dislodge Turkey as reliable NATO member.

While I personally regard Turkey’s army as giant with legs of clay ( brittle and prone to break when seriously challenged), one should not underestimate the fact that the country has one of NATO’s largest military contingents and potentially would dramatically complicate any potential NATO-Russia conflict in the middle east with their relatively powerful military presence and its key Geo-strategic position ( it can choke Russian transit through Bosporus for instance, at least for few days or weeks, which in modern warfare is all it takes to win or lose a war.

The second game is economic. Russians try to get the South Stream gas pipe line build through Turkey to Bulgaria and then on the western Balkans and central Europe. For that it needs Turkey, not Assad. If you were think that Putin is Syria to do charity work for SAA and Assad, than you may want to re think again the whole matter.

In the larger context, Idlib militants, as nasty as they are, are not an immediate priority for Russia.

SAA does not have the military wherewithal to take on the most die hard jihadist on its own, especially when you think they will have an unfettered supply of weapons and manpower pouring through the Turkish boarder. Re claiming Idlib province, will likely stay on the back-burner for a while, unless the Russians are seriously provoked around their military bases, at which point anything is possible.

Leon

Very interesting reply. Thank you

Jens Holm

Antifarmer – looks very well. Probatly develloped for the chinese ricefields :)

gustavo

Operation without an offensive action represents only a time delay for terrorists the attack SAA and Russia air basis. A real offensive is needed on Idlib and Afrin area (Afrain area has been plundered archeology Syria stuff by terorists and Turkey,…Turkey again ! do you ear this RUssia ?).

LaRata

Yes. 4 x TOS-1A….

Andrei

Ha ha death to all jihadists Olee olee more satanic extremist muslims will die Olee olee People like this jihadists they don’t deserve to consume oxygen ,, they are a waste for earth Rotten people

James

No doubt the terrorists will respond using civilians as cover. Would be nice to find a big group of terrorists to toast though if it is possible.

Jacob "Wraith" Wohl
