On October 26, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced that one of the formations of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) held a tactical, live-fire exercise with the Russians military over the span of several days.

The exercise mimicked a large-scale offensive. It began with a series of strikes which were carried out with artillery, rockets, attack helicopters and fighter bombers. Armored units advanced under the cover of the strikes, while military engineers destroyed enemy fortifications and minefields. At the same time, several commando units landed from helicopters behind enemy lines and captured key positions.

While advancing, SAA troops repelled a counter-attack. Air defenses were also used to repel the enemy’s aerial attacks. The offensive was later developed, and the troops managed to capture enemy territory.

Several units from the SAA’s elite Republican Guard and the Russian military grouping in Syria took part in the large-scale exercise.

The exercise was attended by senior officers from Syria and Russia, including Syrian defense minister Lieutenant General Ali Mahmoud Abbas and the commander of the Russian military grouping in Syria Colonel General Aleksandr Chaiko.

The SAA has held several drills since the start of the year. In July, the 25th Special Mission Forces Division, mostly known by their former name Tiger Forces, held a tactical, live-fire exercise with the Russians military. Early on in October, the Republican Guard and 4th Armoured Division held a large-scale, live-fire exercise focusing on desert warfare, while the 5th Corps and Russian forces held a tactical, live-fire exercise on mountain warfare.

With support from Russia, Syria appears to be preparing its military for a new large-scale confrontation. The war-torn country continues to face threats from Turkey, Israel and the United States.
