i`m not a weapons expert but why did neither of these failed shells blow up? i counted 3 failed shells.
probably because the fuse in the shells was not removed. as far as i know that happens only when the shell is correctly fired.
often projectiles or bombs have a safety device in them that doesn’t arm the fuse until it has traveled a certain distance or spun a certain number of revolutions from the launch tube or bomb bay.

as amusing as this may seem, i‘ve heard from russian soldiers that ukrainians are normally quite competent in firing these. it shouldn’t give a false sense of security or that soldiers aren’t doing a hard job. mortars fired are never accurate, btw and russian mortar shells will inevitably also hit civilian infrastructure, even if unintentionally.
