In Video: Upgraded Russian Geran UAVs Receive Reconnaissance Functions

Russian military sources shared the video which reportedly shows the first footage filmed by Russian Geran-2 kamikaze UAV. Earlier it was reported that some of these combat drones were equipped with 4G modems with Ukrainian SIM cards and rotary cameras.

Initially Geran kamikaze drones used a satellite and inertial guidance system. Later, they were upgraded and equipped with a noise-proof Russian GLONASS antenna “Comet-M”, which allowed to increase the accuracy of coordination. Probably, now, the operator can control the drone. The Russian military is likely to equip the leading drone in a squadron of UAVs with new modification.

The upgraded kamikaze UAVs can also perform limited reconnaissance functions. During their attack, in a a one–way flight Gerans will be able to shoot deep enemy rear that other Russian UAVs like ZALA, Supercam or Orlan–10 cannot reach.

The Russian military is increasingly expanding the functionality and range of types of UAVs in service. Drones are equipped with surveillance cameras with satellite transmitters and special lenses aimed to distort the radar signature or other means of jamming.

As a result, the effectiveness of constant Russian strikes in Ukrainian rear is growing, while Ukrainian air defense is depleted.

At a meeting dedicated to strengthening the air defense forces, the Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Syrsky, said that due to a shortage of anti-aircraft missiles, Ukraine is forced to use drones against Russian UAVs. Ukrainian helicopters are also hunting for Russian Gerans. The both sides are using these methods to support their air defense but they affect the effectiveness of interception of enemy targets.
