On December 7, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) confirmed that they had held joint live-fire drills with the US-led coalition in northeastern Syria.
In a statement, the group said that heavy and light weapons were using during the drills, which mimicked an operation against ISIS cells. The drills were held near the town of Abu Khashab, in the northern Deir Ezzor countryside.
“Our forces affirm the continuity of partnership and cooperation with the international coalition in confronting the threat of the ISIS terrorist organization and preventing its re-emergence,” the statement reads.
Several M2A2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) of the US-led coalition took part in the drills. The IFVs even fired BGM-71 TOW anti-tank missiles (ATGMs).
US troops also showcased FGM-148 Javelin ATGMs and AT4 recoilless anti-tank weapon to SDF fighters during the drills.
Last week, the US-led coalition held live-fire drills in the CONICO gas facility and al-Omar oil fields in the eastern and southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor. Heavy artillery and military helicopters took part in the drills.
The US-led coalition’s recent drills in northeastern Syria were not likely directed against ISIS cells, rather against Russia and Damascus. In the last few month, Russian and Syrian government forces straightened their presence in the region and held a series of live-fire drills there.
