On October 17th, Russian President Vladimir Putin led a training session as part of the Grom-2019 command-post exercises. Command was conducted from the National Defence Management Centre of the Russian Federation.

Practical launches of ballistic and cruise missiles were carried out during the exercises from submarines of the Northern and Pacific fleets from the Barents and Okhotsk seas at the Kura testing ground on Kamchatka and the Chizha testing ground in Arkhangelsk Region.

About 12,000 service personnel, 213 launchers of the Strategic Missile Forces, up to 105 aircraft, up to 15 surface ships, five submarines and 310 units of combat and special equipment were engaged in the Grom-2019 exercises.

From the waters of the Barents and Okhotsk seas, strategic missile submarines of the Northern and Pacific fleets launched ballistic missiles at the Kura training grounds in Kamchatka and Chizh in the Arkhangelsk region. At the same time, surface ships of the Northern Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla launched Caliber high-precision cruise missiles from the Barents and Caspian seas on targets on the shore.

The Tu-95MS long-range aircraft were involved in the exercise, which carried out practical launches of air-based cruise missiles at targets at the Pemboy training grounds in the Komi Republic and Kura in Kamchatka.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu accompanied Putin during the exercises. Shoigu said that the armed forces were deploying “highly accurate nuclear weapons and weapons based on new physical principles.”

One of the missiles that was launched was the Kalibr precision cruise missile.

It was launched from the Severodvinsk nuclear submarine:

From a missile boat:

And from the frigate Admiral Gorshkov:

Another missile was the RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile, it was launched from the Plesetsk State Testing Cosmodrome:

The R-29R and the R-29RMU Sineva submarine-launched ballistic missiles were also launched. The Sineva was launched from the Russian cruiser submarine Karelia:

The Tu-95MS long-range aircraft took off and launched Kh-101 cruise missiles:

All the ballistic and cruise missiles launched by the Russian troops during the strategic command and staff exercise Thunder-2019 struck the designated targets and confirmed their stated characteristics.

The Defense Ministry spokesman said: “The tasks assigned during the training of the strategic deterrence forces have been accomplished in full and all the missiles have reached the targets, thus confirming their stated characteristics.”

– “Global Thunder, a globally integrated exercise, also involves allied personnel from a variety of nations, including permanently assigned foreign liaison officers to USSTRATCOM from Australia, Canada, Denmark, the Republic of Korea, and the United Kingdom. Allied personnel integrate into senior leadership teams and work across a broad spectrum of areas…. as well as targeting and information operations insight.” (Globalsecurity.org)

Nations that are part of a military bloc and that host US-NATO military/missile architecture would be recognised as force projection platforms for potential offensive operations (this includes regional nations and broader alliance members that are integrated into bloc operations (such as Australia that interestingly maintains an adversarial /Cold War Posture towards the Russian Federation. It is covertly involved in the U.S-NATO sponsored Ukraine conflict against Russian speaking regions, is participating in increasingly confrontational allied actions against the Russian Federation (including the advocacy of intensifying sanctions/economic warfare actions, is waging an information war through media assets and is employing lawfare actions [“a form of war consisting of the use of the legal system against an enemy” (Lawfare- wikipedia)]).

Australia is integrated into allied foreign operations while developing ‘force projection’ capabilities through procurements such as MK-41 VLS missile systems [compatible with MK-14 cruise missile launch canisters]). It is also integrated to allied nuclear warfare contingency/operational plans/exercises (such as Global Thunder, with Australian bases increasingly hosting U.S. military architecture (including targeting/radar facilities and the hosting of nuclear capable assets). Key domestic procurements are intentionally compatible with the potential to deliver allied nuclear devices [5-6]).

In the unwanted but potential (arguably increasingly probable) eventual event of a direct stage of kinetic conflict between opposing military blocs [1-4], the role of alliance members will logically (and likely necessarily) be factored into calculations.

References: 1.”The US military-intelligence complex is engaged in systematic preparations for World War III. As far as the Pentagon is concerned, a military conflict with China and/or Russia is inevitable, and this prospect has become the driving force of its tactical and strategic planning…. Each of the hearings presumed a major US conflict with another great power (sometimes unnamed, sometimes explicitly designated as China or Russia) within a relatively short time frame, years rather than decades.” (Washington prepares for World War III, WSWS, 5 November 2015)

2. “According to a report in China Military Online, escalations between the two superpowers will lead to the inevitable. “The problem is not whether the war will break out, but when,” the report said. “Our task is to develop the ‘trump card’ weapon for China before the war.” (New Arms Race: China, US Prepare for Missile Warfare, Sputnik, 24/08/2016)

3.”if data on Russia-NATO power balance at the Western direction is analyzed, as well as military activity build-up rate at our borders, scale of combat equipment deployment, if the grade of Russia’s demonization is estimated, one can say that preparation to a real war is taking place. [Such] acts are usually undertaken at the forefront of a war [and it is evident] the US is preparing for a [potential] nuclear conflict……” [Colonel General Leonid Ivashov, President of the International Centre of Geopolitical Analysis]

4.“We know what will happen year after year, and they know that we know… Russia will no longer play games with the USA and get involved in deals in the dark. Russia is ready for serious negotiations, only if they contribute to collective security. All aspects of global security now lie in ruins. There are no more international guarantees for security and the country responsible for the destruction of the global security is the USA. Russia does not intend to reform the world according to its own views, and will not allow itself to be reformed according to foreign views. Russia will not close itself for the world, but anyone who tries to close it to the world will harvest storms. Russia will not act as the savior of the world either, as in the past. Russia does not want war and does not intend to start a war. But today, Russia can see that the explosion of a global war is almost unavoidable and is prepared and will continue preparing. Russia does not want a war but is not afraid of a war. Those who get Russia involved in this process will learn the real meaning of pain”. [Vladimir Putin] (At the Threshold of a Third World War, Southfront, 12/09/2016)

5. Lowy Institute analyst Peter Layton proposed in an article on January 17 that Australia consider “sharing nuclear weapons” rather than developing an independent arsenal. He suggested the placement of US nuclear weapons on Australian soil on the same basis as in Germany, Belgium, Holland, Italy and Turkey, or alternatively, cost-sharing with Britain to build its fleet of Dreadnought-class nuclear submarines, armed with Trident nuclear missiles. (Renewed push for Australia to build nuclear weapons, By Peter Symonds, WSWS, 30 January 2018)

6. “defense analysts from both countries expect an increased presence in Australia for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marines in the form of bombers, nuclear submarines, missiles and troops…. it’s likely the Air Force will begin using runways in the northern part of the country, possibly for the B-52 strategic bomber and B-2 stealth bomber… [missile architecture] cooperation is more likely to speed up….” (Deal likely to bring more US military assets to Australia’, Stripes, June 20, 2014)
