On January 3, intense Russian airstrikes hit the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib where several terrorist groups are active.
The airstrikes targeted the following areas:
- The eastern outskirts of Idlib city;
- The towns of al-Bara and Deir Sunbul in the southern Idlib countryside;
- The town of Armanaz in the western Idlib countryside;
- The town of al-Enkawi in the northwestern Hama countryside.
Russian warplanes have been bombing Greater Idlib for nearly a week now. The recent airstrikes were apparently a response to ceasefire violations by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of the region, and its allies.

In the last 24 hours, HTS and its allies, namely the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army, shelled government-held areas in the northern Lattakia countryside, the northwestern countryside of Hamas as well as in the southern and eastern countryside of Idlib.
The ceasefire in Greater Idlib was brokered by Russia and Turkey on 5 March 2020 following a military confrontation, in which the Turkish military and the Syrian Arab Army exchanged deadly strikes.
A new full-blown military confrontation in Greater Idlib seems unlikely as for now. However, the situation in the region may escalate even further in the upcoming few months.
