Intense strikes hit infrastructure and military sites in Iran on April 7, hours before United States President Donald Trump’s ultimatum to the Islamic Republic to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is due to expire.
Israeli strikes targeted 10 “key” rail sections and bridges in Iran, according to The Times of Israel, which reported, citing an Israeli security official, that the attack was part of efforts to prevent the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from moving weapon systems.
Ahead of the strikes, the Israeli military warned people in Iran to stay away from trains, without providing any specific locations.
The security official said that the guards had used the rail and highway bridges to move weapons and other military supplies. Israel has warned it would strike Iranian “national infrastructure” to cause economic damage to the regime.
The strikes caused casualties. Two people were killed in an attack on a rail bridge in In the central city of Kashan, according to Iranian state media, which also reported that all train services were canceled until further notice in the holy city of Mashhad in the northeast of the Islamic Republic.
Separately, a wave of U.S. strikes hit Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil exporting hub. Citing a senior American official, Axios reported that the strikes targeted military sites.
The attacks occurred hours before Trump’s ultimatum to Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz was due to expire, after which he has threatened a major escalation in strikes, including on Iran’s power plants and bridges.
Amid the strikes, Trump renewed his threats, saying that a “a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” if Iran doesn’t agree to his demands.
“I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will,” he wrote on Truth Social. “However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?”
Trump said that “we will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!”
Despite the strikes and threats, efforts to facilitate talks between the U.S. and Iran are still ongoing, two Pakistani sources with knowledge on the discussions told Reuters.
A last-minute agreement seems plausible. It is also possible that Trump will simply delay his deadline once again. If all efforts failed, Iran will likely strike back by targeting energy facilities across the Middle East. This would cause a serious energy crisis.
