Late on March 22, a series of strikes hit the Yemen capital, Sanaa, which was held by the Iranian-backed Houthis (Ansar Allah).
Yemen’s Al-Masirah TV, which is run by the Houthis, said that four strikes hit Attan mountain and two others hit al-Nahdayn mountain, referring to the strikes as “American-British air aggression on Sanaa.” The news channel didn’t report any casualties.
The two mountains are situated approximately three kilometers to the south of the capital. The locations that came under attack are reportedly known military sites of the Houthis.
In a statement released the following day, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that its forces had conducted self-defense strikes against three Houthi underground storage facilities in Yemen.
“These strikes targeted capabilities used by the Houthis to threaten and attack naval ships and merchant vessels in the region,” the command said. “Illegal Houthi attacks have killed three mariners, sunk a commercial vessel lawfully transiting the Red Sea, disrupted humanitarian aid bound for Yemen, harmed Middle East economies, and caused environmental damage.”
CENTCOM announced in the same statement that its forces also engaged and destroyed four drones in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen in self-defense on the same day.
In addition, the Houthis fired four anti-ship ballistic missiles from Yemen toward the Red Sea, according to the command, who noted that there were no injuries or damage reported by U.S., coalition, or commercial ships.
“These weapons storage facilities presented a threat to U.S. and coalition forces and merchant vessels in the region. These actions are necessary to protect our forces, ensure freedom of navigation, and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels,” CENTCOM concluded.
The Houthis have attacked dozens of Israel-affiliated vessels and others owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since last November in response to the Israeli war and siege on Gaza.
In response, the U.S. and the UK carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in recent months. At least 34 people were killed in the strikes. However, the Houthis are now developing their offensive capabilities and planning to expand their operations to cover vessels in the Indian Ocean, as they travel toward the Cape of Good Hope.
