Iran blocked all traffic in the Strait of Hormuz over the night of June 10 and 11 in response to renewed strikes by the United States.
The escalation began with the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announcing that its forces began launching what it described as “additional self-defense strikes” against multiple targets in Iran “in response to Iran’s unwarranted and continued aggression.” It noted in a post to X that the attack was ordered by the Commander in Chief, President Donald Trump.
Just a few hours before the attack, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the U.S. will hit Iran hard and bomb “key facilities.”
“President Trump said we’ll be hitting Iran hard, and we will be because Iran has a chance to make a good deal,” Hegseth told journalists at CENTCOM headquarters in Tampa, Florida. “You can see when someone is trying to tap, tap, tap on a deal. Instead, they’re going to have tap, tap, tap bombs dropping on key facilities in Iran.”
“We don’t have to restart,” the Defense Secreatry continued, saying that the Pentagon is “prepared to set the terms to ensure we get the kind of deal that President Trump expects.”
“Those strikes, that will happen tonight, they will be strong, they will be clear. If they happen tomorrow night, they will be strong, they will be clear, and throughout Iran has an opportunity to make a deal — that’s the point,” he added.
Iranian media reported a series of blasts in the capital, Tehran, as well as in the cities of Sirik, Minab, Isfahan and on Qeshm Island.
Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force’s fighter jets, including F-14 Tomcats, were scrambled and there were reports of air defenses engaging an F-16 Fighting Falcon.
In an initial response, the Islamic Republic’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters announced that it will be completely closing the Strait of Hormuz to all oil tankers and commercial ships.
The command warned in a statement carried by Iranian media that any vessel attempting passage would be targeted right away.
Shortly after, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy announced that two “violating vessels” attempting to pass through the waterway were struck. It was reported earlier by Iranian media that Iranian naval forces fired at U.S. warships in the same area.
The Islamic Republic is expected to retaliate with strikes in the coming hours. However, its response will likely be limited to American bases in the region, as there are still no reports of Israel taking part in the ongoing U.S. attack.
The ongoing clash will not likely mark the end of diplomatic efforts, as all recent reports suggest that the Trump administration is still interested in a deal with Iran. The situation could, however, get out of hand if Israel joins in and attack the Islamic Republic.
