Iran Hits U.S. Landing, Support Vessels In Kuwait And Near Oman (Videos)

Iran Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced late on March 27 that it had struck several American landing craft utility (LCU) vessels in Kuwait.

In a statement ,the guards said that the strikes were a part of the “84th wave of Operation True Promise 4,” which targeted “U.S. and Israeli terrorists” deployed in the port of Shuwaikh in Kuwait, as well as in the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

It added that a total of six American LCUs were targeted at Shuwaikh using Qadr 380 anti-ship cruise missiles — which have a range of up to 1,000 kilometers — and other weapons.

“Given field reports, three of the combat vessels sank after the strikes, whilst the rest are aflame,” the IRGC further noted.

Kuwait Ports Authority confirmed later that Shuwaikh was struck by several “hostile drones”. In a statement posted to the X social network, the authority said that facilities in the port sustained damage. It noted, however, that there were no casualties.

Shuwaikh Port is one of Kuwait’s core comprehensive commercial ports, but the U.S. maintains a military presence there, including six Runnymede-class large landing vessels.

This class of vessels, also known as the LCU 2000, have a displacement of over 1,087 tons when fully loaded. They can transport rolling and tracked vehicles — including main battle tanks —, containers, and outsized and general cargo from ships offshore to shore, as well as to areas that cannot be reached by oceangoing vessels. They are operated by the U.S. Army, not the Navy.

A day after the attack on Shuwaikh, a spokesperson for the Iranian Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters announced that a U.S. military support vessel operating at a significant distance from the port of Salalah in Oman.

“A logistics vessel supporting the aggressive U.S. army was targeted by the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran at a considerable distance from the port of Salalah in Oman,” the spokesman, Brig. Gen. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, said in a statement carried by state TV.

Oman’s official news agency announced around the same time that two drones hit Salalah, injuring the worker and causing “limited” damage to a crane.

The latest strikes came amid reports suggesting that the U.S. is preparing to launch ground operations in Iran, specifically to capture Kharg Island — responsible for the export of most of the Islamic Republic’s oil. Thousands of American marines and paratroops are already on their way to the Middle East.

Iran is clearly attempting to cribble the U.S. amphibious capabilities that are already present in the region in order to complicate any ground operation.
