Iran has weighed potential military strikes against targets in Europe, including Bulgaria and Cyprus, if United States President Donald Trump escalates the conflict by attacking Iranian infrastructure, according to a Financial Times report published on August 19.
Citing two insiders, the report stated that the Islamic Republic assessed possible strikes against U.S. assets in southeastern Europe. These include Bulgaria, which last month approved the use of the Bezmer Air Base by U.S. refueling aircraft, and Cyprus, where a British air base was struck by a drone in March.
According to one of the sources, Cyprus was also identified as a potential target for retaliation against a renewed U.S. offensive.
Iran was reportedly preparing to expand the war if Trump acted on threats to target Iranian infrastructure, with another source stating that Iran would place “no limits” on its response to U.S. military action.
In addition to potential European targets, Iranian forces have separately examined attacks on subsea fiber-optic cables in the Strait of Hormuz if the conflict intensifies.
The sources pointed to last month’s strike on a U.S. base in Jordan—which killed three American service members—as the Islamic Republic’s most accurate long-range attack to date, demonstrating its capability to hit targets farther afield.
“This was also a message to Europe: it can receive missiles, so it should know where it should stand in this war,” one of the insiders said. “A very big mistake, such as hitting our infrastructure, could make the war go beyond the region and reach Europe.”
Cyprus was already hit earlier in the war when drones struck the British base, though officials reported that Hezbollah carried out the attack.
It is also worth noting that the Islamic Republic already has the means to reach many other U.S. and allied bases deeper in Europe, not just those in Bulgaria and Cyprus.
The report came before President Trump shifted U.S. strategy against Iran towards economic pressure, declaring “ECONOMIC D-DAY” and warning that any country doing business with the Islamic Republic will face “TREMENDOUS economic consequences.”
Trump has, however, in the past acted as if he was moving away from military action in favor of other strategies before suddenly escalating against Iran.
This time it appears that the Islamic Republic is keeping its finger on the trigger and is prepared to respond on an unprecedented scale.

and *if* iran says they will hit european bases then i know they have a very good reason to do it.
so far, all i’ve seen is iran wait to be attacked and then defend themselves. this justifies a much stronger defense in future, even if it is pre-emptive.
the focus should just be on israel and collapsing israel primarily.

this hypocrites that cry when iran attacks us bases inside their countries saying they are innocent. it’s like saying that the get away driver for bank robbers are innocent because they didn’t go into the bank to rib it, that won’t stand up in court and it won’t stand up in world opinion. if a country lets the us attack iran from their land they are as guilty as the us or as the get away driver that will be found in court.

it would be better if they just focus on israel and us bases that have capabilities to intercept iranian missiles in between iran and israel. forcing europe to respond is not something anyone in iran should want especially since among most there is real anti war sentiment. its israel who wants war with iran and force europe to help them as they and their helper trump lost the war they started with iran.
rather just wait until israel directly attacks turkey since they are already bragging about gong to do that.
