Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had intercepted two United States drones and taken control of two others within two days, in a series of engagements that point to growing challenges for American unmanned surveillance operations around the Strait of Hormuz.
On November 4, the IRGC Aerospace Force said it had shot down a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as the 56th drone of this type destroyed by Iranian forces. Footage showing two such drones being released were released.
Later that day, the Corps announced that its air defense systems had detected and destroyed a U.S. MQ-1 drone over Qeshm Island, identifying it as the 15th MQ-1 intercepted since the beginning of the war.
The next day, November 5, the IRGC Navy announced that its electronic warfare unit had taken control of two U.S.-made LUCAS drones, guided them to safe landings and captured them intact. The statement did not disclose where the operation took place.
Iran is clearly becoming increasingly effective at countering U.S. drones through a combination of conventional air defenses and electronic warfare.
The latest engagements also come amid an increase in U.S. military activity around the Strait of Hormuz, including surveillance operations and deployments of additional forces to the region.
U.S. forces struck targets on Qeshm Island on November 2, with American officials describing the operation as a defensive measure against Iranian missile systems threatening American forces.
At the time, the Washington Post reported that the strikes were part of a broader series of American operations conducted without public disclosure in recent weeks.
The increased presence of U.S. surveillance platforms, alongside recent strikes and the deployment of additional military resources, points to preparations for possible renewed operations against Iran.
The concentration of unmanned surveillance systems around the country’s southern approaches is particularly significant, as such platforms can gather intelligence on Iranian military deployments, air defense positions and strategic infrastructure ahead of potential strikes.
