In a new escalation, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced late on June 18 that it had launched a Sejjil ultra-heavy, two-stage, solid-propelled, medium-range ballistic missile at Israel for the first time ever.
The missile was launched in the 12th wave of retaliatory strikes as a part of Operation True Promise 3, the guards said in a brief statement.
The Sejjil is one of the heaviest missiles in Iran’s arsenal. It is said to have a range of 2,000-2,500 kilometers with a circular error probable of less than 50 meters and a warhead weighing 500-1,500 kg. The launch of the missile was documented by several videos from Iran.
Sirens sounded across central Israel amid the attack. Initially, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that a barrage of missiles was launched from Iran. However, military officials said later that a single missile was launched, claiming that it was successfully intercepted.
Israel’s Magen David Adom ambulance service said that a man was slightly injured after a fragment from the intercepted Iranian missile struck a car on a highway in the center of the country.
Shortly after midnight, the IRGC announced the launch of the 13th wave of retaliatory strikes. The IDF said that a small number of ballistic missiles were launched from Iran, adding that of them were intercepted. Later, Israeli military officials claimed that just five missiles were launched. No casualties were reported by Hebrew media.
While Iran continues to launch missile strikes in response to the Israeli attack on its nuclear program, the scale of the strikes decreased significantly over the last two days.
There is no doubt that Israel dealt a blow to the military capabilities of Iran. However, the Islamic Republic is very likely saving missiles and preparing for a possible intervention by the United States, which is reported to be making final preparations to join the Israeli attack.
According to the IDF, Iran has so far launched more than 400 ballistic missiles and 1,000 drones at Israel. The IRGC could launch as many in a single day at targets across the Middle East, and possibly beyond, in response to any attack by the U.S.
