On April 2, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that another one of its advisors was killed in a recent Israeli airstrike on the Syrian capital, Damascus.
The Israeli airstrikes, which took place early on March 31, targeted a position near Damascus according to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency.
“Meqdad Mehghani Jafarabadi, a member of the Revolutionary Guards, was wounded in a criminal attack of the Zionist regime on Friday and was martyred due to the severity of his injuries,” the IRGC said in a statement. “The crimes of the Zionist regime will not go unanswered and they will pay for this.”
Another Revolutionary Guards military adviser, Milad Haydari, was killed in the attack, which didn’t result in any Syrian casualties.
The attack came less than 24 hours after similar airstrikes on the capital and its outskirts, and a whole day before an attack that targeted two air bases in Homs governorate.
Commenting on the killing of the two IRGC military advisers in Syria, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, said that “the Islamic Republic of Iran retains the right to respond to Israel’s state terrorism in the appropriate time and place.”
Dozens of IRGC service members, including senior officers, were killed in Syria while advising and assisting government forces during the war.
Israel does not claim responsibility for specific attacks on Syria, but it has acknowledged conducting hundreds of airstrikes against Iran-backed forces attempting to gain a foothold in the war-torn country over the last decade.
Iran will likely respond to the killing of its two advisors. The IRGC launched attacks with missiles and drones against Israel and Israeli assets in different parts of the Middle East in response to deadly attacks on its members in Syria on several occasions in the past.
