On March 16th, Iran’s Defense Minister, Amir Hatami, said that the country must prepare for nuclear, biological and chemical attacks.
“We should be prepared to defend our nation against all threats and whatever the enemy may one day use as an offensive tool, including chemical, nuclear and biological weapons,” said Iran’s Defense Minister Amir Hatami, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.
Hatami said the “enemies of humanity” were prepared to use all means to achieve their military goals.
Iran’s defense ministry “had adopted all the necessary measures against all threats,” he said.
Hatami’s statements came as tensions climb in the Middle East, with the US and Iran priming to eventually negotiate on salvaging the Nuclear Deal.
Still, Iran’s leadership said that no negotiations can be expected until the US undertakes some concrete steps and not empty rhetoric.
Hatami’s statement also came on the anniversary of when Saddam Hussain used mustard gas on his own people in 1988. 9 months earlier he used the gas on an Iranian city.
On June 28, 1987, Iraqi aircraft dropped sulfur mustard gas bombs on Sardasht, a Northwestern Iranian city with a 20,000 population of Kurdish ethnicity, in two separate bombing on four residential areas. Sardasht was the first town in the world to be gassed where out of the 95% of the population exposed to the poisonous gas 130 civilians surrendered to death. Today, 25% are still suffering severe illnesses from the attacks.
Tens of thousands of Iranians were killed and wounded by chemical weapons during the 1980-1988 Iraq-Iran war. Around 100,000 Iranians are still living with the effects, which include long-term respiratory problems, eye and skin problems as well as immune system disorders, psychological disorders, genetic disorders, and probably cancers.
The chemical materials were supplied to Iraqi Saddam regime by a number of German, French, and Dutch corporations.
So, it is understandable that Iran is concerned over the West’s potential conduct in the case of an open conflict against Israel and its allies.
