Iran received a batch of Mi-28NE attack helicopters from Russia, according to photos that surfaced on social media on January 28.
It is still unclear how many helicopters were included in the batch. The photos, taken at one of the hangars of the Pars Aerospace Services Company based at Mehrabad International Airport near Tehran, show just one helicopter painted with a digital desert camouflage pattern.
The delivery was not announced by the Iranian Ministry of Defense, nor by the manufacturer of the Mi-28NE, Russian Helicopters.
In 2023, it was reported that Iran finalized a deal with Russia on the helicopters, in addition to Su-35 fighter jets. Since then, the Islamic Republic, in addition to the latest Mi-28NE batch, received a number of Yak-130 jet trainers. No Su-35 delivered have been confirmed yet, however.

The Mi-28NE is a Soviet all-weather, day-night, military tandem, two-seat anti-armor attack helicopter, with a top speed of 320 kilometers per hour, and a combat range of 200 kilometers. Aside from a chin-mounted 30 mm gun, the helicopter can be armed with a wide array of guided and unguided weapons.
The helicopter represents a major upgrade to the aviation of the Iranian military, which until now has relied mainly on AH-1J attack helicopters delivered by the United States all the way back in the 1970.

The Mi-28NE delivery comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened the Islamic Republic in the last few weeks over a wave of violent protests. A large-scale U.S. military buildup in the Middle East suggest that Washington could soon launch an attack.
During the 12-day June war with Israel last year, Iran reportedly attempted to use its aging AH-1Js to intercept Israeli drones. Many of the helicopters were struck on the ground at the time, and there is no evidence suggesting that they managed to shoot down any drone.
Notably, the Mi-28NE can be armed with Igla-V and R-73 anti-aircraft missiles, which makes the helicopter very effective as a drone hunter.
The delivery of the helicopters show that military cooperation between Iran and Russia is still ongoing, despite U.S. escalation. It won’t be even surprising if the Islamic Republic receives Su-35s in the near future.
