Iran’s joint military command on July 2 warned that all oil tankers moving through the Strait of Hormuz must use its approved routes or face a “forceful response,” vowing to respond to any “disruptive action” by the United States.
“Any failure to comply, deviation from the designated route, or disregard for the navigation protocols of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Strait of Hormuz will be met with an immediate and forceful response from the armed forces, endangering the security of the violating vessels,” the statement from the Khatam al-Anbiya military command, reported by Iranian state television, reads.
The command also warned that the continued presence of U.S. fighter jets over the strait “causes insecurity in this waterway and threatens regional security.”
“Any attempt by the United States to interfere in security matters or any disruptive action in the Strait of Hormuz will be considered a threat to Iran’s national sovereignty and will be met with a rapid and decisive reaction,” it added.
The warning came just a day after negotiators from Iran and the U.S. held a round of indirect talks in the Qatari capital, Doha.
Recent escalation in the Strait of Hormuz — a chokepoint for 20 precent of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments — was reportedly discussed in Doha. Although U.S. President said that the talks went well, the Iranian warning indicate otherwise.
Notably, the warning also came after the U.S. Central Command put out a statement about having a meeting with officials from Middle Eastern nations in Bahrain that said “leaders underscored their shared commitment to the free flow of commerce through the Strait of Hormuz.”
“We continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with our regional partners,” Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, said. “The discussions underscored our shared commitment to regional security and stability.”
The U.S. launched strikes against Iran twice last week after accusing the Islamic Republic of targeting two vessels close to the Strait of Hormuz.
With no clear progress in the implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed last week to end the war, more clashes are to be expected.
The deal solidified Iran’s claim to the Strait of Hormuz, and now after signing it, the U.S. is attempting to challenge this. The Islamic Republic will not likely tolerate this.
