An adviser from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force has died following injuries sustained in a recent United States strike on Syria, Iranian media reported on August 15.
“Colonel Ahmadreza Afshari was martyred due to injuries sustained from aerial bombardment from the coalition violating Syria,” top Revolutionary Guard Commander Hossein Salami said.
According to the Mehr News Agency, Afshari was transferred to Iran for medical treatment several days earlier following a strike carried out by “the coalition forces invading Syria.”
“The Iranian advisors, who are present in Syria at the official invitation of the Syrian government, have played an important role in helping the Syrians fight terrorism and help establish peace, stability, and lasting security in this country,” the semi-official news agency said in a report.
On August 11, Lebanon’s Al-Mayadeen TV, which is close to both Iran and the Syrian government, reported that six military personnel were killed and 11 others were wounded when a drone strike hit a bus that was transporting them in the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor.
The deadly drone strike reportedly took place near the town of al-Bukamal, a stronghold of Iran-backed forces located less than seven kilometers away from the border with Iraq. It is possible that Afshari was wounded in this strike, which was unofficially blamed on the U.S.
The strike came after more than a dozen U.S. troops were wounded in two separate attacks in Iraq and Syria earlier in the month. Both attacks were blamed on Iran-backed forces, namely the Islamic Resistance in Iraq.
The death of Afshari came as as Israel is preparing with help from the U.S. for a possible response to its recent strikes on the Houthi-held Yemeni Red Sea port of al-Hodeida as well as for the assassinations of Hezbollah’s military chief Fuad Shukr in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, and Hamas’s leader Ismail Haniyeh in the Iranian capital, Tehran. It will likely lead to more education by Iran and its allies.
