Iran Says IRGC Commander Was Killed In Syria

A commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) was killed in Syria, according to Iranian media on September 5.

The Fars News Agency identified the soldier as Yahya Rostami, who was killed on August 31. The semi-official agency, however, did not give further details about the nature of his work or the circumstances of his death.

While some Syrian activists claimed that Rostami was killed during clashes with al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham near the northwestern region of Greater Idlib, others speculated that he lost his life in an attack by ISIS cells in the central region.

The IRGC has been actively supporting Syrian government operations against terrorist groups on both fronts for several years.

Dozens of service members of the IRGC, including senior officers, were killed in Syria while advising and assisting government forces during the war.

Rostami was not the first member of the IRGC to lose his life in Syria this year. Last March, two advisors of the IRGC were killed when a series of Israeli strikes hit military positions near the capital, Damascus. Back then, the guards vowed that the attack would not go unanswered.

those who prefer “democracy” for syria enjoy playing with fire at a distance, yet many regional nations prefer peace and prosperity for all.
