Iran has developed a hypersonic ballistic missile that can penetrate all existing missile defense systems, Brigadier General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force (IRGCASF), announced on November 10.
“This missile has a high speed and can maneuver in and out of the atmosphere. It will target the enemy’s advanced anti-missile systems and is a big generational leap in the field of missiles,” the commander was quoted as saying.
Hypersonic ballistic missiles, which can deliver nuclear weapons, travel and maneuver at least five times faster than the speed of sound. This makes them difficult to track and intercept.
“It will be able to breach all the systems of anti-missile defense,” said Brig. Gen. Hajizadeh, adding that he believed it would take decades before a system capable of intercepting it is developed.
“This missile, which targets enemy anti-missile systems, represents a great generational leap in the field of missiles.”
While there have been no reports of a hypersonic ballistic missile being tested by Iran, there is no denying that the county do possess a large domestic arms industry that stood strong in the face of international sanctions and embargoes.
The announcement came just a few days after the IRGCASF successfully test-launched the Qaem 100, Iran’s first three-stage space launch vehicle. The solid fueled vehicle can place satellites weighing 80 kg in an orbit 500 kilometers from the earth’s surface.
Iran has been working nonstop to develop its missile capabilities in order to cope with threats from the United States and its allies in the Middle East, first and foremost Israel. Tehran’s large missile program saw a number of breakthroughs in the last few years.
If the IRGCASF was indeed able to develop and produce a hypersonic ballistic missile, the U.S. will likely respond by upping its pressure on Iran. The talks on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal could face another setback.
