Iran has foiled a drone attack on a complex of the Defense Ministry in the central province of Isfahan late on April 4, according to the Tasnim news agency.
“The Amir al-Momenin complex in Isfahan was the target of a failed attack by a small drone which was foiled by defense systems,” the semi-official news agency reported, adding that the attempt did not cause any damage.
Commenting on the report, Iran’s Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi said “for now, I cannot confirm this as it needs more investigation.”
In the past, Iran blamed Israel for several similar attacks that targeted its infrastructure, nuclear facilities and military installations.
Iran reported an unsuccessful drone attack on a defense ministry “workshop complex” in Isfahan on January 28. Tehran’s envoy to the United Nations accused Israel of being behind the attack on February 1. Back then, the envoy said that Iran reserves its “legitimate and inherent right” to retaliate. Later on February 10, the Intelligence Ministry and the intelligence arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that they had arrested the “main perpetrators” of the drone attack.
The drone attack on the Amir al-Momenin complex in Isfahan came just two weeks after a deadly confrontation between Iranian-backed forces and the United States military in Syria’s northeastern region.
It also took place following a series of four Israeli attacks that targeted the western and southern regions of Syria. Two military advisers of the IRGC were killed in one of the recent attacks. The guards said that the deadly attack will not go unanswered.
All in all, the failed attack will lead to more tensions between Iran and Israel. A limited military confrontation could break soon in a third country, like Syria, Lebanon or Iraq.
