Iran announced on March 5 that it had launched pre-emptive strikes against Kurdish forces in Iraq’s Kurdistan region to prevent them from launching an offensive into its territories.
In a statement, the Islamic Republic’s Intelligence Ministry said that the strikes targeted posts of “separatist groups” that intended to enter through western borders, adding that they had sustained heavy losses.
The ministry statement, carried by state media, noted that Iranian forces were cooperating with “noble Kurds” to thwart the “Israeli-American” plan to attack Iranian soil.
“We targeted the headquarters of Kurdish groups opposed to the revolution in Iraqi Kurdistan with three missiles,” Iran’s official IRNA news agency posted on Telegram, quoting a separate statement by the military.
From his side, Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, warned that “separatist groups should not think that a breeze has blown and try to take action,” stressing that the Islamic Republic “will not tolerate them in any way.”
The Iranian announcement came just a day after several reports from sources like Fox News and The Jerusalem Post claimed that Iranian Kurdish opposition forces had launched a cross-border military operation in the Islamic Republic. Iranian media quickly denied these reports, and aside from regular Iranian strikes on these forces in Iraq’s Kurdistan region, there has been no signs of any military operations.
A separate report published by the Associated Press on the same day said that Kurdish forces were preparing for a potential cross-border military operation, and that the United States had asked Iraqi Kurds to support them.
An earlier report by CNN even revealed that the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was involved and that the plan is meant to further pressure Iran, currently under attack by both the U.S. and Israel.
One person familiar with the discussions told the network that the idea would be for Kurdish armed groups to take on the Iranian security forces and pin them down to make it easier for unarmed Iranians in the major cities to protest.
Another U.S. official said that the Kurds could help sow chaos in the region and stretch Iranian military resources thin. Other ideas suggest that the Kurds take and hold territory in the northern part of Iran that would create a buffer zone for Israel.
Despite all of these recent reports, Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government President Nechirvan Barzani declared on March 5 that the region will remain neutral in ongoing regional conflicts, pledging to serve as “a factor of peace.”
In a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Barzani emphasized that the Kurdistan Region “will not be part of the conflicts” and “will continue to be a factor of peace,” actively supporting diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and protecting regional populations from the threat of war.
The Kurdish leader also extended condolences to Iran over the loss of life in the ongoing U.S.-Israeli strikes, reaffirming his government’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening friendly relations with Tehran despite the complex regional dynamics.
This stance was not surprising as any attack on Iran, even if backed by the U.S., would pose a major risk to Kurds in both the Islamic Republic and Iraq.
Iranian Kurdish opposition groups are deeply fractured with differing ideologies, and competing agendas. The balance of power is also widely in favor of Iran, whose regular and reserve ground forces are said to be numbered in the millions. Adding to all of this the fact that such a move could trigger a response from Turkey.
Still, the U.S. could pressure Kurdish forces into such an adventure in the hope of at least sparking some civil war within the Islamic Republic.
