Iran has started up advanced centrifuges to boost the country’s stockpile of enriched uranium in a third step in Iran’s reduction of commitments under the deal, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) reported on September 7.
The move comes in response to the US unilateral decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal and boost sanctions pressure on Iran.
Iran activated 20 IR-4 and 20 IR-6 centrifuges for research and development purposes.
“The capacity of these machines is many times more than the previous machines. This started as of yesterday (Friday),” AEOI spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi told a news conference in Tehran.

“Under current circumstances, the Islamic Republic of Iran is capable of increasing its enriched uranium stockpile as well as its enrichment levels and that is not just limited to 20 percent,” said Kamalvandi, adding “We are capable inside the country to increase the enrichment much more beyond that.”
Previously, Iran increased enrichment up to 4.5%, exceeding the 3.67% level allowed under the 2015 nuclear deal and went beyond the 300-kg limit for low-enriched uranium.
According to the Iranian leadership, Teheran’s retaliatory measures will be reversible as soon as the UE finds practical ways to shield the mutual trade from US sanctions, which were reimposed in 2018 when US President Donald Trump officially decided to withdraw from the deal.
