Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned the British ambassador in Tehran, Rob Macaire, over the “illegal seizure” of an Iranian oil tanker in Gibraltar on July 4.
“Following the illegal seizure of an Iranian oil tanker in Gibraltar by British Royal Marines, the UK envoy to Tehran has been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Seyyed Abbas Mousavi, a spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, wrote in a tweet.
The spokesman added that Tehran will soon announce the details of the illegal seizure of the supertanker, Grace 1.
A detachment of the Royal Marines seized Grace 1 in the early hours of the morning. Gibraltar’s chief minister Fabian Picardo said the supertanker was transporting oil to Syria, claiming that this would represent a violation of the EU’s sanctions on the Damascus government.
Later, acting Spanish Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell, revealed that Gibraltar’s authorities detained Grace 1 in Spanish waters upon a request by the U.S. to the UK.
The seizure of the supertanker could lead to a political crisis between the EU and Iran. The EU had demonstrated that the bloc was committed to avoid oil sanctions on Tehran.

The report I saw said it was due to sanctions on imports to Syria. I don’t know if that is true but it may just be a little double speak. Where they cede their territorial waters to the convention in areas like international shipping straits such as the Strait of Gibraltar.
