Iran To Build 7,000-ton Heavy Destroyer For Its Navy

Iran is beginning construction on a brand new heavy destroyer, named “Negin”, Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi announced in an interview with Tasnim News Agency on November 24th.

The displacement of the destroyer is expected to be between 5,000 and 7,000 tons, he said, adding that the warship will be used in long-running naval missions without any limitation.

According to him, the Islamic Republic “has made major achievements in manufacturing different weapons and military equipment, especially vessels.”

No other details of the large destroyer were presented, and just the size puts it on par with some of the major combatant warships of the US or Europe.

Currently, the largest warships employed by the Iranian Navy are the Moudge-class destroyers, sitting between 1,300 tons and 1,500 tons of displacements, much smaller than the new one that was announced.

Days later Khanzadi made another announcement regarding the Moudge-class.

Iran is to get a new state-of-the-art destroyer named “Dena,” the Iranian Navy commander announced on November 27th.

The warship was entirely designed and manufactured by domestic military experts and it should join the ranks of the Iranian Navy in the coming months.

Khanzadi praised the recent successes of the Iranian navy and said that “extended deterrence via expansion of the Navy’s capacities and capabilities in open waters is on the agenda of the force.”

“To make this fast-paced move, the Navy needs a set of equipment, capacities, and capabilities to make attempts in high seas for the benefit of global maritime security and national economy,” he added.

The Dena destroyer is supposed to be commissioned in the navy between January 1st and February 19th, 2020.

The commander further said Dena is a new Moudge-class (Wave-class) destroyer similar to the Jamaran and the Sahand destroyers, adding that it has new capabilities compared to other destroyers of the country.

They Moudge-class destroyers are described as destroyers by the Iranian state media but the size and weight of the ships are similar to that of modern corvettes. The ships are also referred to as destroyer escorts.

They have a displacement of 1,500 tons, a length of 95 meters. Their propulsion comes from 2 × 10,000 hp (7,500 kW) engines, in addition to 4 × 740 hp (550 kW) diesel generators.

They are armed with the following weapons:

  • 4 × Noor or Qader anti-ship missiles;
  • 1 × 76 mm Fajr-27 naval gun;
  • 1 × 40 mm Fath-40 AAA;
  • 2 × 20 mm cannons Oerlikon;
  • 4 × Mehrab Missiles reverse engineering of SM-1 SAM or Raad Missiles;
  • 2 × triple 324 mm torpedoes;
  • 2 × 12.7 mm heavy machine guns.

Khanzadi also said the domestically made Damavand destroyer, which crashed into a jetty back in January last year, will return to service by the end of March 2020 with advanced gears, including vertical launch missiles, installed on it.

The Iranian navy in December announced plans to manufacture a home-made trimaran (with three hulls in parallel) destroyer named Safineh to be used in asymmetric coastal warfare and rapid reaction operations. The blueprint of the heavy vessel which is 100 meters long and enjoys the trimaran technology was unveiled late last year.

Also, low hydrodynamic resistance in high speed and a floating propulsion system appropriate to the needed corresponding dimensions and speed are among other features of Safineh.

It should be noted that these warships are specifically announced for the Iranian Navy, that’s separate from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy.

The Iranian Navy is a strategic force, with its large warships, while the IRGC Navy focuses heavily on smaller ships, fit for skirmishes and specifically aimed at dismantling large surface combatants such as a US Navy aircraft carrier.

The Iranian Navy is in a dire of modernization, as it has an aging fleet that cannot even nearly compete with the US and other of the more imposing global naval forces.

dont write ridiculous Statements…it is pathetic….u have no idea what u are writing….again BROTHER….we both believe in the resistance…good….but the idea that ANY Nation but China(in the near future), can battle the UK and US Navy is absurd….the US and UK have decades of Advance in numbers and size………….

till now Iran was tottally 100% correct in Building hundreds of small speedboats with exrtreme Speed to confront the UK and US Navy ships…they are fast to build and cost efficient and a pain in the ass to battle…….one big iranian destroyer meaNS DIDDLEY IN A WAR…

Did u miss the whole point of the project? This is for Iranian navy, IRGC is the one with speed boats

BlueInGreen

Iran is still building many speed boats and the Iranian Navy is set to take in a large delivery of Speed Boats by this years end.

There seems to be some pieces of information that were left out in this brief overview but I guess that can be forgiven since this isn’t a deep look into recent Iranian naval developments.

A big step forward for Iran has been the miniaturization of technology allowing Iran to construct smaller missiles giving Iran an expanded capability to fit missiles more compactly. This directly leads to the recent Iranian implementation of VLS on newer Iranian naval vessels.

It is said that the VLS systems to be fitted onto newer Iranian naval vessels will be of a CRAM or SAM type missile dubbed Oghab which is believed to be an Iranian version of the Tor m-1. This Iranian made version is being fitted on both land vehicles and ships. On top this Oghab will be the possibility to fit the Bavar-373 system onto the larger 5,000-7,000 ton warships since now these larger ships will be able to adequately accommodate bigger more advanced long range systems such as the Bavar-373. Iran also started to fit Phalanx type CWIS systems onto older ships and this CWIS systems will be fitted onto the newer ships as well. Another important development is that the larger ships will have bigger, more advanced static radars that have impressive range. This coupled with the possibility of fitting the Bavar-373 can allow Iran to expand its SAM envelope significantly at sea pushing hostile forces further out.

Iran is also in deep into building 2-3 more Fateh submarines and a new line of Submarine dubbed Besat which will incorporate VLS. Iran unveiled not too long the ability to launch cruise missiles via Submarine so this added capability will surely be important in the long-run.

i truly love it, many thanks for info :))))

I see a nice torpedo target.

gryzor84

I don’t know for that but what I know for sure is that the INS Hanit WAS a pretty good test target for iranian-made C-802 copies called the “Noor” back in 2006.and the “super advanced and well-defended” vessel almost sank and had to be towed to port in emergency. Besides, a few of your friends got torn apart on impact, didn’t they ? ;)

It was war, casualties always happen t’s part of it. We can and should sink down their ships if we have the chance to do it.

gryzor84

And I’m supposed to care ? You were cracking jokes about something you never did to them while that they did it you, I was pointing out the funny irony in that, nothing else, I don’t give a shit about your “vision” beyond that. And no you can’t, way too risky and you would sure take terribly embarrassing losses trying that, otherwise we would have seen the IDF try something stupid in this zone already.

klove and light

first Point..iam a strong believer in the RESIStANCE..in hezbollah and Iran and houthis…..BUT

Iran is making the same mistake as the Germans with their BISMARCK destroyer….will cost billions and sink in minutes…just as Iran has pointed out it can sink any ships of the US or UK Navy……

BlueInGreen

Iran hasn’t totally abandoned its speed boat approach to combating larger USN naval vessels but the Speed boats are IRGC mainly and not Artesh.

There has been a recent concerted effort within the Iranian military establishment to push more traditional conventional types of weaponry instead of asymmetrical ones it would seem (my opinion). With Iran’s indigenous technology level rising with each passing year as more advanced designs of weapons roll out, each one a better iteration of the previous. There will logically be a push to obtain a more symmetrical type military.

The course Iran is going is a positive one as far as the Navy is concerned but the small Iranian military budget and low turn out rate for new ship will stymie any plans for Iran to build a large capable symmetrical navy.

verner

tend to agree -a number of super fat missiles that can reach objects far far away and which can’t be intercepted by ordinary missile defenses and which can sink an air craft carrier in one go – that’s the way to go. the unhinged states of A has I think 13 such carriers and is planning to charter the one UK just built and can’t afford to operate. the problem is that if a carrier is sunk, the reply will be nukes and then some more – to have a carrier sunk is beyond the tolerable and there is just one reply – total obliteration of the offender.

Free man

Iran is a jihadi paper tiger. They are only good at fighting unarmed protesters.

Concrete Mike

We all know who the best in the world are at shooting civilians, its your adored israeli regime.

Very good for fuel spendings as well as non saving electricity programs. Even Trump would be proud.
