On January 30, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari said that Iranian forces will withdraw from Syria after finishing their mission there if Damascus government requests this, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
“When all the tasks are achieved, Iranian forces will leave the country with the consent of the Syrian authorities,” Ansari told reporters at the Russian city of Sochi, according to TASS.
Ansari also stressed that the Iranian forces were deployed to Syria in the first place only to “resolve issues that the Syrian people have been facing.”
Both the Iranian Army and the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) deployed in Syria in early 2012 to counter the terrorism and to secure the Iranian interests in Syria. Iranian forces achieved two of its main goals in Syria by securing the holy Shiite shrines around the city of Damascus in early 2012 and then securing a land route from Iran to Lebanon through Syria and Iraq in late 2017.
One of the last missions of Iranian forces in Syria is breaking the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) siege on the towns of al-Fu’ah and Kafriya in the eastern Idlib countryside, according to the sources.
Top Israeli officials have accused Iran on several occasions of building military bases and even missile factories in Syria in order to maintain a military presence in the country after the end of the war. Moreover, Israel even claimed that Iran is planning to use Syria as a platform to strike its territories.
Of course, this is the right way to proceed, and not because Israel wants to.
