An Iranian-affiliated commander was killed as a result of a drone strike on the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on April 29.
The strike targeted a house and military vehicle in the town of al-Sayyal, which is located around 20 km to the north of the al-Bukamal border crossing with Iraq.
“The attack resulted in the death of a commander of a non-Syrian nationality and the injury of five militiamen,” the SOHR’s report reads.
According to the London-based monitoring group, the slain commander was serving in the ranks of “Liwa Fatemiyoun,” an Afghan group formed in 2014.
Liwa Fatemiyoun is funded, trained, and equipped by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Today, the group is mainly active in Syria’s central and eastern regions. 10,000 to 20,000 fighters are reportedly in service with this Afghan group.
The SOHR’s claims are yet to be confirmed by an independent source. Locals and pro-government sources didn’t report any strike on Deir Ezzor on April 29th, or in the few days before.
These claims may be nothing but a propaganda stunt meant to exaggerate Iran’s role in Deir Ezzor as well as to present a distorted image of the situation in the government-held part of the governorate. Nevertheless, it is important to note that both Israel and the US have targeted Iranian forces in Deir Ezzor in the past.

I admire your motivation and dedication to serving your country. If most of the Israeli soldiers have your kind of motivation, then I have no doubt you’ll win against the Shiites. Mistakes happen during a war, but in no way me or my friends to service used our weapons to hurt innocent people in Gaza. The same as I am against Hamas killing innocent Israelis, I am against it from our side aswell. Those Shias will eventually feel our true power, we still have an unfinished business from 2006. As for me, been in active service during both 2006 and 2008 conflicts, and as a reservist in 2014. Been in the front each time, and I would do it again if it protects my people. Your claim that no country would start a war with Iran might have convinced me but for two reasons: 1) Iran doesn’t dare go nuclear openly 2) Iran is negotiating another JCPOA despite losing hundreds of billions to unjustified sanctions, and the killing of Soleimani. Remember this happened at a time Iran was largely in compliance of the deal.
These are not the actions of a country which feels confident it’s beyond attack. These are the actions a country which feels vulnerable and is employing both restraint and diplomatic opportunities to ward off and an attack.
Imagine what North Korea or Russia would have done in Iran’s place. They’ll avenge the death of their General by killing a U.S general within days of that attack, and they would shred the nuclear deal the very day Trump pulled out. Iran obviously won’t dare such steps because it’s still not strong enough to fully deter a U.S attack.
First of all there is not another JCPOA, all negotiations are about the JCPOA from 2015, nothing more. Beside that JCPOA is limited to the country’s nuclear agency, IRGC has its own Nuclear Program working together with North Korea. Iran doesn’t need to go openly for it as long as no country dares to attack Iran.
Killing of Soleimani or another person doesn’t have any influence on Irans path wherever it is. This is because of IRGCs very deep and complex structure. Iranian enemy attacks are only limited to sabotage or assassinating, not open war like Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen and etc…
