Iranian-backed forces massing around Deir Ezzor city
On June 3, a large convoy of Iranian-backed Liwa Fatemiyoun arrived in the town of al-Mayadin in the southern Deir Ezzor countryside, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
The convoy, which came from the town of al-Heri on Syria’s border with Iraq, consisted of 30 vehicles carrying logistics, fighters and military equipment.
“The convoy settled in the farmlands [around al-Mayadin] which were transformed by Iranian forces and their militias into a large gathering center for them in Deir Ezzor,” the London-based monitoring group said in its report.
Last month, similar reinforcements were sent to the town of al-Bukamal, south of al-Mayadin. Dozens of Iranian-backed fighters were reportedly deployed there.
ISIS cells increased their attacks on southern Deir Ezzor in the last few months. In a recent attack on al-Mayadin, seven Iranian-backed Iraqi fighters were killed.
Iranian-backed forces are likely reinforcing their positions in southern Deir Ezzor in order to address the growing ISIS threat there.
These guys need to be careful of Israeli provocations.
Not that much. Israel needs to be careful Hezbollah doesn’t come whup their ass, again. The militia is twice the size it was in 2006, better armed, supplied, recieved training upgrades from Russia, when Syrian forces recieved theirs, and Hezbollah is battle hardend. Nothing is more organised than the militia, nothing. Israel fears Hezbollah, and Iran. Israel has more to fear. Iraq, Iran, and Syria have military alliances between them, and all have military alliances with Russia. Iran, and Syria are long time allies, very long time. Iraq is more recent ally with Russia, having never done business with Russia before. Nouri al-Maliki is the first Iraqi to stand on Russian soil. Two, maybe three years ago, he came to the Kremlin to request a military alliance with Russia. He left with both trade, and military alliances, and the suggestion that alliances with it’s neighbors would be considered wise.
They keep sending more in but they need to start moving them out, sending more in won’t help, it’ll just make it worse. Iran has to realize they can’t brainwash the local Sunni population into becoming Shia, they can take over their schools and teach them what they want to but those Sunni school children go back home to their parents and get a different message from them. Just how more divisive can Iran be, most SF commenters jump up and down about any US or Turkish activities that oppress the local populations in Syria but happily turn a blind eye to what’s happening in Deir ez Zor, either that or they’re blissfully unaware as to what’s really happening. STOP OPPRESSING THE LOCAL SUNNI POPULATION, that’s how Iran can stop Isis, stop creating Isis by treating the local Sunnis better, move the Pakistanis, Afghans, Iraqi, and Hezbollah forces out, then let the local Sunni and Shia NDF militias do their jobs, and if they need help let regular SAA forces and the Russians come in and help them, that’s all Iran has to do. Instead of paying all that money to foreign militias operating in Syria [which cost the Iranians 4 times as much as they pay the locals], they should instead pay that money to all the LOCAL NDF militias in Deir ez Zor, both Sunni and Shia, and fund a couple of helicopter bases for the Russians to operate out of, and then most importantly send all those unwelcome foreign fighters somewhere else, preferably home. There’s an easy fix for the Deir ez Zor problem, tolerance and trust would serve Iran way better here, the iron fist doesn’t seem to be working at all, the tighter Iran grips the more of Deir ez Zor slops through their fingers. On a side note Iran’s just had 9,000+ people infected during the last 3 days, 3,000 a day, and Turkey’s refusing to keep up oil imports from Iran which is hurting Iran’s revenue terribly, so things aren’t looking good over there.
