Yahya Rahim Safavi, a senior commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and a close adviser to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, warned on August 17 that another war with Israel or the United States could begin at any time.
Israel launched a surprise attack against Iran on June 13, stating that its goal was to cripple the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program. The war ended when a ceasefire was suddenly announced on June 24, just two days after the U.S. joined Israel by attacking three key nuclear sites in Iran.
“We are not in a ceasefire, we are in a stage of war. No protocol, regulation or agreement has been written between us and the US or Israel,” Safavi told Iranian media.
“I think another war may happen, and after that, there may be no more wars,” he added.
The guards commander went on to say that Iran should “become strong,” because “in the system of nature, the weak are trampled.”
“We must strengthen our diplomatic, media, missile, drone and cyber offensive strategy. We, the military, do scenario-planning, we see the worst case, and we prepare a plan for it.”
Just a few days earlier, Israel’s military chief of staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir hinted at the possibility of launching another attack on Iran.
During a speech at a military ceremony August 14, Zamir said that the Israeli military was ready to repeat its strike on Iran if necessary.
“If necessary, we will know how to act again with precision, intensity and lethality,” the commander said at the time.
Aside from these remarks, there are serious indications of ongoing preparations in both Israel and Iran for a new round of fighting.
Recent reports revealed efforts in Israel to strengthen the country’s multi-layered air defense network, which was degraded by repeated Iranian missile and drone attacks during the 12-day war. On the other side, the Islamic Republic is reported to be working to rebuild its air defenses and to bolster its missile capabilities.
It is unclear how the next war could begin, but it is highly likely that it will also be initiated by Israel, either directly or indirectly.
A series of blasts and fires has been reported across Iran since the end of the war, with reports revealing that officials in the Islamic Republic suspect sabotage by Israeli intelligence.
