Iranian-backed forces have test-fired locally-made single barrel rocket launchers in the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on June 23.
The tests took place near the government-held towns of al-Mayadin and al-Bukamal in the southern countryside of Deir Ezzor
“The militias deployed the locally-made launchers in the deserts of al-Mayadin and al-Bukamal then launched a number of Iranian rockets randomly towards the depth of the desert as part of the test,” the SOHR’s report reads.
According to a previous report by the London-based monitoring group, forces affiliated with the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units began making the launchers earlier this month.
The manufacturing process is taking place in a military base located in the vicinity of al-Mayadin. Iranian experts are allegedly overseeing the process.
In May, a large Iranian weapons shipment containing “short-range” rockets arrived in southern Deir Ezzor coming from Iraq.
The SOHR’s claims are yet to be verified. These claims may be nothing more than a propaganda stunt meant to provoke attacks by Israel on the government-held part of Deir Ezzor. Iranian-backed forces in the region mainly operate against ISIS cells.
