The Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban group foiled on November 5 a plot by the Israeli Mossad spy agency to launch an attack with drones from eastern Iran, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.
The official news agency said that three Iranian nationals working for the Mossad were arrested in the mountainous areas between Iran and Afghanistan.
The Mossad cell planned to launch suicide drones from the Afghanistan border areas towards targets in Iran, according to IRNA, which noted that the three suspects will soon be handed over by the Taliban to Iranian authorities.
Tehran and Jerusalem have long accused each other of espionage activities as a part of a lengthy shadow war between them.
In July, Iran claimed it had disbanded a major network of the Mossad that planned large-scale acts of sabotage, including blowing up the grave of Qassem Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who was killed in an American airstrike in Iraq’s Baghdad three years ago.
Later in August, Tehran said it foiled a major Mossad plot to sabotage its missile production and its defense industry as a whole.
The reports of another Mossad plot against Iran came as Israel is conducting a large-scale operation in the Gaza Strip in response to the October 7 Hamas-led surprise attack. Although Israeli officials didn’t hold Tehran directly responsible for the attack, which claimed the lives of more than 1,400 Israelis, they do believe that the attack wouldn’t have been possible without Iranian support.
