The Iranian Navy started on August 21 a live-fire exercise, the Islamic Republic’s first since the end of the 12-day war with Israel.
The exercise, codenamed “Sustainable Power 1404,” will go on for two days with the participation of warships, submarines, warplanes, coastal defense missile sites, and electronic warfare units in the northern Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman.
According to the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), the first day of the exercise featured the deployment of multiple weapons systems, including various anti-ship cruise missiles with different ranges, such as “Nasir,” “Qadir,” and “Qader,”, alongside drone operations and electronic warfare exercises.
The Iranian Navy, estimated to have some 18,000 personnel, didn’t play any role during the recent war, which began on June 13 with a surprise Israeli attack on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear sites.
The war ended when a ceasefire was suddenly announced on June 24, just two days after the United States joined in by attacking three Iranian nuclear sites. Since then, the Islamic Republic has been working on strengthening its military capabilities.
On August 20, Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Aziz Nasirzadeh said that Iran has equipped its forces with new advanced missiles.
“The missiles used in the 12-day war were manufactured… a few years ago,” Nassirzadeh said, according to IRNA. “Today, we have manufactured and possessed missiles with far greater capabilities than previous missiles, and if the Zionist enemy embarks on the adventure again, we will undoubtedly use them.”
Tensions between Iran and Israel remain at its highest levels ever. Exactly a week ago, Israel’s military chief of staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir hinted at the possibility of launching another attack on Iran. Reports also revealed efforts in Israel to strengthen the country’s multi-layered air defense network
Later in the week, Maj. Gen. Yahya Rahim Safavi, a senior commander of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and a close adviser to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, warned that another war with Israel or the U.S. could begin at any time.
With the talks between Iran and the U.S. on halt, a new war seems inevitable. Israel will likely start the war as soon as possible to benefit from the support of the administration of the U.S. President Donlad Trump.
