On May 10th, an Iranian Navy destroyer accidentally opened fire on one of its own warships.
Iran’s “Konarak” warship was mistakenly targeted by a missile fired by its “Jamaran” destroyer during a military drill in the Gulf of Oman.

Iranian state news agency IRNA reported that at least 1 sailor had been killed and at least 28 were injured. 12 of them were hospitalized, 16 were discharged soon after being taken by ambulance to hospital.
However, Al Arabiya reported that the Iranian Navy had later admitted that at least 19 had been killed.
It also mentioned that initial rumours surrounding the incident claimed that as many as 40 sailors had been killed in the incident.
“The incident took place in the perimeter of Iran’s southern Jask port on the Gulf of Oman during Iranian Navy drills on Sunday. At least one person was killed and several were injured,” Iranian state tv reported.
“The vessel was hit after moving a practice target to its destination and not creating enough distance between itself and the target,” it added.
“The circumstances of the incident are currently undergoing technical examinations,” Iran’s student News Agency ISNA said.
The incident took place near the port Jask, about 1,270 kilometers (790 miles) southeast of Tehran in the Gulf of Oman.
State media reported that the Dutch-made Konarak had been overhauled in 2018. The 47-meter (155-foot) vessel could carry up to 40 tons, and usually carried a crew of 20 soldiers. The Jamaran destroyer has been on duty since 2010 and it is equipped with anti-ship missiles.

The situation in the Persian Gulf has been strained, after US President Donald Trump told the US Navy to sink any Iranian warships that “harass” US warships, following an incident on April 16th, in which Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy speed boats sailed close to a carrier strike group.

However, Iran needs to improve its C3I and fire discipline as I have mentioned before this problem dates back to the Jange Tahmili, as eager missile operators fire off without checking shipping of air traffic lanes as we saw in the case of Ukrainian airliner. All the hyperbole aside, unfortunately 19 sailors did suffer fatality as the new generation of fire and forget missiles are sea skimming and have no defence against them and pack a 500 kilo warhead with devastating effect. Accidents to happen when practicing with some of the most potent and lethal missiles in the world. A sad but cogent warning to Iran’s enemies.

This is near Jask, just outside of the Persian Gulf in open sea and shows the range and potency of Iranian missiles. I have always been concerned about fire disciple as an aviator and these days with the proliferation of SSM and manpads any trigger happy soldier can do a lot of damage. Hopefully, IRIN will learn from this unfortunate event but shows the firepower of the newer fast Iranian build Fighting Frigates (FF) like Jamaran which pack a very deadly punch as the vessel is equipped with four Noor / C-802 surface-to-surface anti-ship cruise missiles, mounted in box launchers on the roof of the upper deck level between the radar and the main mast pointing towards either sides. The single shot hit probability of the Noor, with a range of 170 km, is estimated to be as high as 98%. These are fire and forget missiles with a variety of warheads intended to inflict the maximum damage. The next heavier Dena class destroyers being built at Bandar Abbas will have 8-12 of even more deadlier missiles with ranges upto 500 kms sea skimming.

In 2017, Iran wargamed an attack on an Americunt aircraft carrier and found that two Nasr heavier missiles if hit at the propulsion and weapons storage deck would sink it in less than twenty minutes due to secondary explosions and inferno. Especially, without propulsion in the narrow and shallow confines of the Persian with thousands of shore based SSM and laser guided artillery every ship would be sunk in a day and not a single Wahhabi family cunt shithole like UAE, Saudis, Kuwait etc would have any navy or airforce left.

The next generation of NASR (Victory) SSM being deployed on the DENA class destroyers are even more lethal and pack a 750 lbs HE warhead and have anti-jamming measures with a range 500 nautical miles plus. Check out the solid state cruise propulsion system. These can hit Diego Garcia at will and sea skimming lethality.

Indian media reports that the Konarak was towing a target and did not release the tow line in time and the smart missile changed course and hit the bigger target. It looks like Iran has successfully mated AI in target acquisition for its missiles. This is very bad news for Iran’s enemies.
Bigger target may mean stronger steel and structural defense. Or if AI is looking for some particular metric, the same can be replicated in a decoy. What lock in method was used? Radar or sight?

Look at the video of that ship. I don’t know what you see but I see a smouldering hulk with zero military value. That ship is dead …. no weapons, no propulsion, no electrical system. There’s a chance the engines might be salvageable but most likely the only value left in her is scrap.
You get her in drydock and strip everything you MIGHT be able to salvage the hull provided it wasn’t bent or twisted by the impact but it’s likely cheaper to scrap her. Modern ships are built in sections in a shop …. trying to rebuild the ship piece by piece in drydock would be more expensive than scrapping and starting over.
I think Iran will repair as a sign of defiance and technical know how. It is old Dutch built ship anyway and was deployed in the 80’s. Ironically it is armed with 2 Fajr-4 missiles as well. The Iranian ship Konarak is a Hendijan-class support vessel. Konarak is 47 metres (154 ft) long, was built in the Netherlands, has been in service since 1988 and was overhauled in 2018 and has missile launch capability.

The Konarak was hit by a new Fajr-4 anti-ship missile being tested by the frigate Jamaran during an exercise on Sunday. The ship suffered extensive damage but Iranian tugs have towed it to Jask naval base and Iran has stated that it will be repaired and put in service in a very short time.
