Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) carried out strikes against targets in Pakistan on January 16, just a day after launching ballistic missiles at a base of the Israeli intelligence in Iraq and terrorist groups positions in Syria.
According to the semi-official Tasnim News Agency, “precision missile and drone” were launched at two strongholds of the Jaish al-Adl, a terrorist-designated Sunni Salafi separatist militant group, in the Koh-e-Sabz area of the southwestern Pakistani province of Balochistan.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said that the strikes on its territory killed “two innocent children” and warned Iran of “serious consequences.” The ministry also described the attack as an “unprovoked violation of its airspace by Iran … inside Pakistani territory.”
“It is even more concerning that this illegal act has taken place despite the existence of several channels of communication between Pakistan and Iran,” the ministry said in a statement.
Pakistan also lodged a “strong protest” with a senior official in Iran’s Foreign Ministry in the Iranian capital Tehran and called on the Iranian charge d’affairs, saying the “responsibility for the consequences will lie squarely with Iran.”
Jaish al-Adl said that the IRGC had used six suicide drones and a number of missile to destroy two houses where the children and wives of its fighters lived. Videos posted to social networks showed smoke rising from Koh-e-Sabz and a destroyed building on fire in the area.
Jaish al-Adl operates on both sides of the border and has previously claimed responsibility for attacks against Iranian targets. Its stated goal is the independence of the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchistan.
Last December, Iran accused the separatist militant group of carrying out an attack in Sistan and Baluchistan, which resulted in the deaths of 11 Iranian police officers.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani defended the attack on Pakistan by saying it was a “precise and targeted” operation to deter security threats.
Later, Iranian Defence Minister General Mohammad-Reza Gharaei Ashtiani stressed that the country will continue to respond to any threat.
“We have the legitimate right to defend the sovereignty of our lands if we are exposed to a threat from any party. Diplomacy is the priority, but we will take measures if we do not reach a result, as happened in the last operation. We will respond without a doubt if our national interests are exposed to any threat,” the minister said.
The attack in Pakistan came a day after the IRGC launched ballistic missiles, targeting what it claimed was a spy base for Israel’s intelligence in Erbil city, the capital of the northern Iraqi autonomous region of Kurdistan, and at “anti-Iran terror groups” in the northwestern Syria region of Greater Idlib.
The missile strikes were carried out in response to the Kerman bombings and the recent assassinations of “resistance elements,” according to the IRGC.
Iran’s recent retaliatory strikes, especially the last wave on nuclear-armed Pakistan, show how the country is willing to take serious risks in order to maintain deterrence.
