On January 8th, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei made an address broadcast on national television, following missile attacks on US bases in Iraq.
“A slap was delivered last night, but what is important is that the seditious presence of America in the region should be ended,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.
He further said that his country was very well equipped in the face of the global bullying powers.
“It is a very blatant mistake that some people think if they take a step back, the Americans will stop their hostility.”
He praised Iraq for voting to expel foreign troops, and primarily US troops from the country.
“The Americans want Iraq to be like the former idolatrous regime in Iran or Saudi Arabia today – a region full of oil to be under their control so they can do whatever they want – a milking cow in the words of that individual,” he said, referring to US President Donald Trump.
The US, according to Khamenei had similar plans for Lebanon, but Hezbollah had become too strong and refused to allow it.
“Thank God, Hezbollah has become stronger day by day and today, both Lebanon’s hands and eyes are Hezbollah and the role of our martyr [Gen. Soleimani] is paramount and outstanding,” he said.
Notably, Khamenei said that the missile attacks on US bases were only the first step of Tehran’s response, thus there is likely to be more ways in which the Islamic Republic will respond in the coming days and weeks.
Also on the morning of January 8th, Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces warned that the missile attacks were simply a warning to the US.
He said the attacks on the American forces in Iraq revealed only a tiny part of the capabilities of the Iranian Armed Forces and was carried out in response to the US terrorist move to assassinate General Soleimani.
“From now on, any new evil act by the US will face a stronger and more crushing response with a broader range,” he said.
“The time has come for the evil authorities of the United States to realize the Islamic Republic of Iran’s capabilities in a greater extent of global geography, adopt a principled approach, and pull the forces of their terrorist army out of the region as soon as possible,” Baqeri underlined.

The hegemon retaliation may occur during the POTUS address to USrael tomorrow, which is often the timing. Trump originally was going to make the address shortly after the strikes, but I suspect this did not give the hegemon enough planning time so they postponed it. My guess is that Israel will make sure the US retaliation sounds big but is in reality limited, as Israel is now panicking that they will be massively targeted.

Information is hard to come by but Israel likely has one reactor capable of plutonium production and Israel is a small state with a limited access uranium stockpile. Most of Israel’s atomic weapons are on cruise missiles mounted on submarines, although Israel does have a small arsenal of IRBM’s. Total destructive power of Israel’s far smaller than Pakistan’s program might total 100 usable warheads (that’s generous on Israel’s budget and with the maximum possible physical footprint of her industrial base.) Those 100 warheads might total 5 -7 mt, total. 8 mt at Max. Most of Israel’s nuclear armed cruise missiles are probably 25-50 kilotons. Israel does not have enough, not close, to destroy Iran in totality. Hundreds of smaller Iranian cities would survive intact and some parts of many of the larger ones. So tens of millions of Iranians would be set on revenge, even if it takes a century. But, no need to fret. Russia, China, and Pakistan will never tolerate the use of weapons of mass destruction by Israel against Iran. For Russia and China it sets a precedent that they’re unprepared to live with and for Pakistan, which although is just cordial to Iran and sits across the Sunni/Shia divide, they will never tolerate the destruction by Israel of a Muslim state, especially one next door. If Iran were to attack Israel with a mass missile attack tonight, using conventional warheads Israel would have to respond with conventional weapons of her own. In this case maybe you could have looked at a map of Iran and tried to understand just how big it is realitive to the limited destructive power Israel has based on her diminutive at best sized warhead armory. And imagine the potential consequences of use in a situation which is merely threatening as opposed to one which might terminate Israel’s existence. There were no casualties because Iran told Iraq they were going to strike, and Iraq told the US since they have personnel side by side together. The personnel got to cover safely before the strike. Besides 15 out of 17 missiles struck the base and destroyed vehicles, aircraft, and buildings. That’s good enough :)

Phalanx is for slow moving targets not ballistic missiles. Only Russian systems can stop ballistic missiles.
None were intercepted, but Iran made the mistake of telling Iraq who then gave the US a heads up. This way US got to safety before the strike. Unless ofcourse Iran didn’t want to cause casualties and only wanted to cause devastation to avoid a war

I had commented before on Trump’s motive for ordering the assassination of Suleimani. in one comment I posted a few days ago, I provided 3 scenarios with the third being the most plausible and at the same time hard to believe. I post the third scenario below, followed by an excerpt from UK’s Guardian on Iran’s missile strike. Basically, it is playing out as might be expected under scenario 3 and ironically very similar to Trump attacks on Syria – all bluster and little harm.
