Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps chief Hossein Salami warned on May 8 that any attack by Israel or the United States on the Islamic Republic would “open the gates of hell”.
“These are serious warnings to the Zionist and American authorities… If you make the slightest mistake, we will open the gates of hell for you,” Salami said in a video carried by the semi-official Tasnim News Agency.
The guards leader added that U.S. officials should be wary of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s attempts to drag Washington into an unending war.
He also warned Israel that as they struggled to cope with the aftermath of missile attacks by the Houthis (Ansar Allah), they would be ill-equipped to withstand hundreds and thousands of missiles.
Iran is currently engaging in indirect nuclear talks with the U.S. Despite these efforts, tensions continue to mount with Israel.
Earlier this week, a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis from Yemen hit Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel, wounding six people and forcing several airlines to suspend flights to the country. Following the May 4 attack, Netanyahu vowed a tough response against the Houthis, as well as their main backer, Iran.
Iran denied supporting the attack on Ben Gurion at the time and warned that it would retaliate against any attack on its territory.
“Iran underlines (its) firm determination… to defend itself,” the Iranian foreign ministry said, warning Israel and the U.S. of “consequences.”
Israel has already launched two waves of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, but it is still unclear if will carry on with its threats to Iran.
On May 8, Defense Minister Israel Katz warned the Houthis against launching more attacks, and said that Iran would also be targeted.
“I also warn the Iranian leadership that it funds, arms and operates the Houthi terror organization… You are directly responsible. What we did to Hezbollah in Beirut, Hamas in Gaza, to Assad in Damascus and the Houthis in Yemen, will also be done to you in Tehran,” Katz stated, in comments that echoed previous U.S. threats.
Any attack by Israel, even a covert one, could lead to the collapse of the nuclear talks and throw the U.S. into a confrontation with Iran. As Salami warned, this may indeed be what Netanyahu, who opposed the previous nuclear deal with Iran, is looking for.
