Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on March 31 warned that it will target United States companies in the Middle East by the next day in retaliation for attacks on the Islamic Republic.
“These companies should expect the destruction of their respective units in exchange for each terror act in Iran, starting from 8 p.m. Tehran time on Wednesday, April 1st,” the guards said in a statement, warning employees to leave their workplaces, and calling the companies “key institutions involved in terrorist espionage operations.”
The Iranian semi-official Tasnim News Agency listed 18 companies that will be targeted in the region – the list included U.S. companies Microsoft, Google, Apple, Meta, Oracle, Intel, HP, IBM, Cisco, Dell, Palantir, Nvidia, Tesla, JP Morgan, GE, and Boeing, as well as G42 and Spire Solutions of the United Arab Emirates.
“As the scope of the regional war expands to infrastructure war, the scope of Iran’s legitimate targets expands,” the news agency reported.
Many of these companies operate regional offices, cloud infrastructure or data center operations across the Gulf, including in the UAE.
Early in the war, Iranian drone strikes damaged Amazon Web Services data centers in the UAE and Bahrain, disrupting services and exposing the vulnerability of physical tech infrastructure in the region.
Responding to the IRGC latest threat, the White House said that the U.S. military is prepared to thwart any attacks from Iran.
“The United States military is and was prepared to curtail any attacks by Iran, as evidenced by the 90 percent drop in ballistic missile and drone attacks by the terrorist regime,” a White House official told Reuters.
Both sides have already exchanged strikes on energy infrastructure and industrial facilities, and the IRGC’s threat now marks a new phase that would take the war to the tech sector.
If Iran follows through with this threat, it will increase the cost of war on the U.S. and Israel in a significant manner. The effects of strikes on data centers in the Middle East in particular could have far reaching consequences. Major disruptions in services are to be expected.
