The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy announced early on June 27 that it responded to what it called an American “violation of commitments” by targeting “United States Army deployment sites in the region.”
In a statement, it said the response followed U.S. strikes on the Islamic Republic, which it described as a breach of a ceasefire and international arrangements related to the Strait of Hormuz.
“According to Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, arrangements for controlling transit and movement in the Strait of Hormuz are under the responsibility of the Islamic Republic of Iran. However, the United States, by inciting various parties, sought to violate this commitment, and an appropriate response was given, and it will be the same going forward. In the event of a repeated act of aggression, our response will be broader than this,” the IRGC Navy added.
The Bahraini Foreign Ministry later said that the kingdom’s territory was targeted by several drones launched from Iran. It condemned the attack as a “flagrant violation of international norms and conventions” and reserved its right to respond.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said that its forces struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations and coastal radar sites overnight after Iran hit the vessel Ever Lovely on June 25 with a one-way attack drone. The Singapore-flagged cargo ship was exiting the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani coast at the time of the attack.
The command noted in a statement that “unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces clearly violated the ceasefire.”
The U.S. strikes hit Sirik County and Qeshm Island in southern Iran along the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian media, which didn’t report any casualties. Video footage were released later by CENTCOM.
The strikes were the first direct attack by the U.S. against Iran since the two signed a memorandum of understanding to end the war earlier this month.
Commenting on the escalation, U.S. Vice President JD Vance warned the Islamic Republic on X that “violence will be met with violence.”
“If they have disagreements about how the MOU is being applied, they can pick up the phone,” he wrote.

The escalation is unlikely to cause the collapse of the memorandum of understanding. However, the coming days could see similar clashes.
