Iraq Calls For International Pressure On Israel To Halt Possible Strikes

Iraq has called for support from the international community to urge Israel to halt planned strikes against Iraqi territories.

Israel has faced hundreds of drone and missile attacks from Iraq since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October of last year, with the majority of these attacks being claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed factions.

In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar called on the United Nations Security Council On November 18 to pressure Baghdad to end attacks by Iran-backed factions, warning that Israel has the right to defend itself under the UN Charter.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said on November 19 that Sa’ar’s threat was a pretext for Israel to attack Iraq and expand the war in the region.

Later, Arab media reported that the United States informed Baghdad that Israeli strikes against Iraq were “imminent,” unless government forces managed to prevent Iran-backed factions from launching attacks against Israel.

Iraq took the Israeli threat seriously. Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein confirmed on November 22 that al-Sudani directed the armed forces to take strict measures against any factions using Iraqi territory to launch attacks. Since then, the IRI has not announced any attack against Israel.

Still, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced on November 23 that it sent letters to the UN Security Council, the secretary-general of the UN, the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to request for assistance in pressuring Israel to halt any planned strikes.

In a statement, the foreign ministry said that “Iraq is a pillar for stability in its regional and international surroundings and is among the countries most committed to the principles of the UN Charter.”

“The Iraqi letters indicated that the Israeli entity’s letter to the Security Council is part of a systematic policy to create allegations and pretexts to expand the scope of conflict in the region,” the statement reads.

While Israel is acting like a victim, the country is thought to have violated Iraq’s airspace at least twice while launching strikes against Iran in April and October.

It is unclear yet if the IRI has completely halted attacks against Israel, or the group just made a temporary pause. In either case, Israel will not likely launch strikes against Iraq if no more attacks are reported. The U.S., who maintains more than 2,500 troops in Iraq, is certainly not looking for an escalation between the two countries.
