Iraq Says Agreement To Host Turkish-Syrian Meeting Was Reached

An agreement had been reached with Syria and Turkey to hold a meeting between officials from the two countries in Baghdad, Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein announced on July 12.

“There is communication at the level of the Iraqi leadership with the Syrian and Turkish sides, and the date will be determined after returning to Baghdad,” Hussein said in a statement from Washington.

Earlier in the day, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he had instructed Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad “to start restoring relations between the two countries.

Erdogan also said that “Fidan was authorized to organize a meeting with President Assad in a third country,” without elaborating.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani revealed last May that his government was working on reconciliation between Turkey and Syria, reviving talks which were launched by Russia around two years earlier.

Later in June the talks saw a breakthrough when Assad told Russia’s Syria envoy, Alexander Lavrentyev, that “Syria welcomes” all reconciliation initiatives with Turkey.

In response to the statement, Erdogan said that he was ready to talk to the Syrian president. However, the remarks and a later attack on Syrian refugees in Turkey led to deadly protests in Turkish-controlled parts in northern Syria.

Turkish-Syrian talks reached a halt last year after Damascus insisted that Ankara, a key backer of Syrian rebels, should withdraw all of its forces from the country before any normalization. The two sides have apparently overcome this obstacle.

Serious security issues, like the de-facto state Kurdish forces are trying to establish in northern and eastern Syria with help from the United States and the future of millions of Syrian refugees in Turkey, have apparently encouraged both sides to resume the talks. It is still unclear however if Ankara and Damascus could reach a comprehensive agreement.

turkey, jordan, the saudis and egypt have a lot to make good on their own ethnic, the muslims in the middle east and north africa, but they’ve to wait ’til china throws entire strike groups into the south china sea on a months basis. when this point arises, the colonials will pay for what they’ve done to mankind.
