The Iraqi military has dug a 140 km long trench on the border with Syria, a spokesman for the Iraqi Joint Operations told the Sputnik news agency on March 17.
Maj. Gen. Tahseen al-Khafaji said that the trench is meant to stop ISIS cells from moving across the border line between Iraq and Syria.
“The Iraqi-Syrian border are 610 km long, the unfortified part of it is approximately 220 km held by Peshmerga forces in the Kurdistan region, and now, through the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Water Resources and the Popular Mobilization Units, we are working to close this part,” the spokesman said. “So far, we have been able to cover approximately 140 km by digging a trench with the depth of 3 meters and the width of 3 meters.”
According to the spokesman, a barbed wire fence and a network of towers equipped with optical surveillance systems, which were provided by the US-led coalition, were also deployed along the border with Syria.
Maj. Gen. al-Khafaji confirmed that the Iraqi military coordinates with all sides in Syria, especially government forces, in order to counter ISIS threat.
“We have important coordination with the Syrian side on this matter through the Quadruple Security Center located in the Ministry of Defense, which includes Russia, Syria and Iran in addition to Iraq,” the spokesman said.
The spokesman revealed that ISIS cells infiltrate the border between Iraq and Syria through the desert and a chain of mountains. In a recent attack on the border, the terrorists killed a soldier of the Iraqi Border Guards’ 6th Brigade.
ISIS has been working to expand its influence along the Syrian-Iraqi border for a while now. However, the terrorist group is not making any progress thanks to the efforts of Iraqi and Syrian forces.

Saudi Arabia will not get to impose a dictator, but any democracy is better than a Houthi government (at least for the Saudis). Turkey has waited too long on facilitating a negotiation in Yemen. Houthis don’t wanna talk cos they’re making a few military gains. I think the Bayraktars and Syrian rebels will force an edition of their playbook. Let the precision-guided munitions kick some ass and drive those fuckheads to the negotiating table.
If Turkey gets involves openly in Yemen against the Houthis , President Erdogan and Turkey will have to face a large battle in Idlib, Iraq and a well-armed PKK. Changing the balance in the ME is not permitted and Ankara doesn’t need further complications.

You remember how they opened gunfire, killing over 40 of your IRGC soldiers who were marching on a parade ground. I read that the rest of the IRGC soldiers were fleeing for their lives in random directions, abandoning their proud celebration of the Iranian revolution. I laughed about this until tears ran down my cheeks. IRGC soldiers fleeing for their lives ON Iranian soil! Iran retaliated with a missile strike days later in what would be Iran’s first or second precision strike abroad. The PKK is a double-edged sword for Iran. Besides, Turkey’s recent moves may be due to Iran’s support of the PKK in Sinjar. You can bring on the large battle in Idlib. Turkey is fully prepared to defend its forces. Without Russia, all Shiite fighters won’t stand a chance in Idlib or any part of Syria, even against the rebels, let alone Turkey. I think Turkey should enter the Yemen quagmire. Any kind of order is better than chaos. America is not about to intervene and restore order. The Saudis cannot restore order in Yemen because they have demonstrated their impotence. Turkey should talk to the Houthis and Iran about ending this war, reconciling, and set the stage for free and fair elections nationwide. Whoever wins (whether Sunni or Shiite) should rule in peace. There should be NO armed militias outside state control, whether Sunni or Shiite. This is the best way to achieve stability. If the Houthis refuse and insist of a military victory, then Turkey should prepare and arm the Syrian rebels for a tough battle against the Houthis. With their experience and competence, I’m sure the rebels will exact a high price on the Houthis that may force a rethink up their ranks. Turkey should try what it can to end the suffering in Yemen and restore peace and order.

Turkey will not enter Yemen, I said why. Only limited to some business with SA selling drones which will be shot down by the 358 Missile. Syrian rebels are losing Syria, they will not fight on behalf of Turkey in hell like Yemen. Saudi Arabia lost too much puppets from Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. If the attack on the parade was done by some Sunni takfiri group which does not involve the Kurds, why did Iran launch missiles at a meeting of Kurdish leaders in Iraq killing dozens of them? But you must also know that this council is not omnipotent or 100% loyal to Iran. The NSC opposed every single candidate for prime minister in Iraq before reluctantly endorsing Kadhimi. They wanted a pro-Iran candidate, but didn’t get it. When it became clear to them that continually delaying the appointment of a prime minister will lead to civil war and an American intervention, they had no option but allow Kadhimi because he was the lesser of the two evils for them. If they had continued to stall the process, more protesters would have spilled into the streets, fights will break out, and the U.S will intervene (destroying the NSC and creating a new one, probably dominated by secularist Shiites and Sunnis). Kadhimi was not their candidate. They only saw him as not being as pro-American as the others. Period.

Is there a way to have any reasonable chat with Iranians? Suppose Iran instructs its militias to never oppress the Sunnis, or even better defend and protect their lives and properties? They can work towards building an inclusive society and helping the Sunnis and Shiites wherever they can.
