On April 15, Spokesman for the Iraqi Security Media Center Brigadier General Yehia Rasool announced in an official statement that the Iraqi Army had launched a security operation to secure Iraq’s border with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
Brig. Gen. Rasool said that units of the Iraqi Army are aleardy working to secure a wide area between Sinjar Mount and the town of al-Ba’aj south of it, near the Syrian-Iraqi border. Meanwhile, other units of Salahuddin Operations Command began clearing the area between the town of Hatar, the al-Sayniya desert and the city of Baghdad from ISIS cells, according to Brig. Gen. Rasool.
The spokesman added that Iraqi Army units in al-Anbar province had begun clearing areas around the towns of Akashat and al-Rutbah near Iraq’s border with Syria and Jordan as a part of the operation.
Brig. Gen. Rasool also announced that Iraqi Army units had fully secured the Hauran valley along the Iraqi-Saudi border from ISIS. The valley, that stretches for more than 350km, had been actively used by ISIS cells, according to Iraqi sources.
Local observers believe that the Iraqi Army will secure all the remaining areas within days. However, ISIS will likely resurface there soon after as its cells are often leave such areas ahead of any operation of the Iraqi Army.
