On April 11, the Iraqi Army and the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) launched a joint security operation in the eastern province of Diyala.
The PMU’s 20, 23 and 110th Brigades and several units of the army are leading the operation, which is aimed against ISIS remnants in the area of Khanaqin near the border with Iran.
“The targeted area is on the river’s side, near Shiekh Baba – the area of Sherk Zur, which will be inspected and secured,” the PMU’s reporter in Diyala said.
Recently, ISIS cells intensified their operations in Diyala. The terrorist group carried out at least six attacks on the Iraqi Army, the PMU and Kurdish Peshmerga in different parts of the province during the last week.
Government forces are conducting serious efforts to put an end to the ISIS presence in Iraq. Earlier this week, the army and the PMU launched a large-scale operation against the terrorist group cells in al-Anbar’s western desert.
