ISIS’s so-called northern Baghdad governor was killed along with three other terrorists in a joint operation by the Iraqi military and the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), the Iraqi capital operations command announced on June 7.
The operation took place in the district of Tarmiyah, which is located some 50 kilometers to the north of Baghadad. ISIS maintains an active presence in Tarmiyah. From the district, the terrorist group’s cells launch attacks inside the capital on a regular basis.
In a statement, Baghdad Operations Commander Lieutenant General Ahmed Salim identified the slain ISIS governor as Adnan al-Lahibi.
“In a special operation based on accurate intelligence information, a force from the 23rd Infantry Brigade, 6th Division and the PMU’s Tarmiyah Regiment managed to ambush ISIS terrorist gangs and kill four terrorists, including the so-called governor of northern Baghdad, in the Tarmiya district, north of the capital,” the statement reads.
Iraqi government forces stepped up operations against ISIS cells in recent months and managed to inflict heavy losses on the group.
Last week, Iraqi warplanes destroyed five hideouts of ISIS, four near Hamrin lake in the eastern province of Diyala and one in Wadi al-Chai in the northern province of Kirkuk. The airstrikes, which were carried out based on information provided by local intelligence agencies, killed at least 15 terrorists.
The recent operations confirmed that Iraqi government forces are more than capable to deal with the threat of ISIS without any support from the United States-led coalition.
